Mission: Impossible - Fallout 'Joke'
« on: August 01, 2018, 10:38:51 AM »
I know this is the spoiler forum but you know - SPOILERS

Maybe this has already been said/written about a bunch elsewhere, or it's just obvious, but in our review, coming out 8/3, you'll hear me mention that McQuarrie offers a "clever joke" in the opening by having Ethan's assignment come embedded in a copy of Homer's Odyssey. But it occurs to me it's not so much McQuarrie's clever joke as it is Solomon Lane’s. As we come to learn and Ethan himself says during the showdown in London, Lane has been orchestrating the entire mission (with the help of his guy on the inside, Walker), all with the explicit purpose of...

Ethan 'reuniting' with his wife. Same mission as Odysseus.

That's fun. I also thought about that little reference, but I had forgotten about it by the time we found out that the whole thing was a setup.

If you to run it deeper, while it's about him returning to his wife, it's also about him returning home. And, well, Ethan will never have a home. It will always elude him.

And to go even further, the second scene in the movie puts Hunt in a between Charybdis and Scylla situation, when he must choose between the lives of the many or the lives of the few. There is also a Calypso whom he cannot be with, in the person of the MI6 agent, and as double agents, the Syndicate and the Apostles make use of Trojan horse tactics. Etc.

I was sure there were more elements embedded in, it’s just been so long since I read the Odyssey. Well done!
