What do the stars really MEAN man?
« on: September 12, 2018, 09:50:51 PM »
So pointless random question, but ... when we give films star reviews ... what does it really mean?  Do the stars carve up the percentile rankings, like 20% of all movies get 1 star, 20% get 2 stars, etc.?  Or is it like a bell curve where most films get 3 stars?  Or is it attached to something more phenomenological, like 1 star means I felt disgust, 2 stars means disappointment, 3 means indifference, 4 means happy, and 5 stars is reserved for the two-dozen of my favorite movies of all time?

I suppose it's different for everyone. For me it's...

1 star: Hated it
2 stars: I enjoyed parts
3 stars: I enjoyed it
4 stars: I really liked it
5 stars: My all-time favourites

More of the latter for me. Any film I generally enjoyed gets at least 3 stars, and anything I generally didn't enjoy gets 2 stars or less. 2 and a half stars being for films I feel mixed on for whatever reason. Broadly speaking, I think what The Deer Hunter posted above would apply to my ratings as well.

Somewhere we have a thread in which we explain our systems.  My numbers mean:

5-- One of the greatest movies of all time.
4.5-- Not the very tippy top, but I will defend this movie to my death.
4-- Great
3.5-- There's a lot of great stuff in there, the movie overall is good.
3- It's fine.
2 or 2.5-- Not to my taste
1-- Even if the movie has a lot of positive aspects, I hated my experience with it.
