I think he is quite good, though he didn't quite make my ballot. It's a very charismatic performance, which is pretty essential to the film (which, unlike most people here I guess, I do like despite the terrible writing).

On Twitter a few days back Matt Zoller Seitz (I think?) suggested that there should be twice as many acting categories to have one for real life roles and one for fictional roles for each subcategory. That might fix the problem of judging what amounts to impersonations to wholly invented characters.

A part of me likes it. Seeing more performances get recognition would be nice. On the other hand, the award for best adapted performance feels like you're tagging it "the lesser type of acting"... I dunno maybe it is... it's just when you bunch 'em all together like that and make it official it feels different. :-\

Also, like sports, it's always disruptive to the stats to reformulate things. It's just one more asterisk. :))

MZS based this suggestion on the fact that something like 8 out of the last 10 best actor wins were for playing real people, and Malek might make that 9 out of 11.

I wonder whether that (perceived) bias comes from having something to compare the performance to? Like, Oh my goodness he was just like Freddie Mercury! As opposed to a fictional role where there is no preconceived notion of how the performance should look.

I feel like I am Team "Imitation Isn't Acting"...I thought Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles, Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash, PSH as Truman Capote and Meryl Streep as Julia Childs were all terribly overrated performances. I did however really like Malek's Freddie Mercury.

To be honest, I have very little by way of reference point on how Charles, Cash, Capote, Childs OR Mercury moved and spoke. So it would be hard for me to like or not like them based on the degree of accuracy. I think even without that reference point one can sense a lack of authenticity (a matter of opinion to be sure, I might not see it where others do).

So even if the actor nailed the imitation, I might find it too big, too over the top and generally off-putting. I'm not sure if that is on me at that point or if the actor holds a responsibility to find the balance, even it it means compromising the accuracy. I felt the real person, the depth to Malek's Mercury. Other than the teeth thing there wasn't a lot that felt particularly mannered to me.

We didn’t nominate Roma for Art Direction?

The Filmspots are canceled.
