I always think "this year I'm not going to get to a lot of titles" before watching way more than I intend to. The problem is there are so many that appeal to me, I can never settle on just one type of Western. My Classic Hollywood Stars alone gives me 34 titles to look for, and that's not counting Walter Brennan or Ward Bond.

4 titles sitting in my Computer...
Return of the Bad Men (1948) w Randolph Scott and Robert Ryan
Saddle Tramp (1950) w Joel McCrea
Bugles in the Afternoon (1952) w Ray Milland
The Treasure of the Lost Canyon (1952) w William Powell

I wonder if I can complete Thief's Monthly Film Challenge 2019 for March with only Westerns.

I'll saddle up with this on the slate, which will get me to 100 films seen in my Westerns marathon!

The Naked Spur (Anthony Mann, 1953)
Shane (George Stevens, 1953)
The Moonlighter (Roy Rowland, 1953)
Hondo (John Farrow, 1953)
Escape from Fort Bravo (John Sturges, 1953)
Border River (George Sherman, 1954)
Ride Clear of Diablo (Jesse Hibbs, 1954)
River of No Return (Otto Preminger, 1954)
Johnny Guitar (Nicholas Ray, 1954)
The Far Country (Anthony Mann, 1954)
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Stanley Donen, 1954)
Silver Lode (Allan Dwan, 1954)
Track of the Cat (William A. Wellman, 1954)
Vera Cruz (Robert Aldrich, 1954)
Bad Day at Black Rock (John Sturges, 1955)
The Violent Men (Rudolph Mate, 1955)
Ten Wanted Men (H. Bruce Humberstone, 1955)
Man Without a Star (King Vidor, 1955)
Wichita (Jacques Tourneur, 1955)
The Kentuckian (Burt Lancaster, 1955)

20 films! I'll do my best to cram them all in, and will likely run over into April to get there.

I've got a few westerns on hand, all of which I've seen before at least once. But if anyone is planning on watching any of them, I'd definitely join them. Or if they were thinking of revisiting them, I'd be game. I'd love to compare notes. :)

My options:
-Fistful of Dollars / For a Few Dollars More / The Good The Bad The Ugly
-Pale Rider
-Two Mules for Sister Sarah
-Unforgiven
-Open Range

Every year, I consider showing Pale Rider to Mrs. 1SO. I talk myself out of it because I'm not sure it will hold up for me.

Would love to get your opinion of Joe Kidd (1972)
Quote
Much as I think of Sturges as a lesser Western director, I now see how his approach influenced Eastwood the director as much as Siegel and more than Leone. The story is so lean and no-nonsense it goes from the beginning right to the end. There’s a sniper fight Smirnoff would appreciate where the images travel faster than the sound of the rifle shots, and a great bit of over-the-top nonsense when Eastwood derails a train and it crashes through a bar. Aside from that, very forgettable except for whatever fun you get watching Clint Eastwood’s badass Western persona.

I really wanted to get to Unforgiven this time around. How many times have you seen it, smirnoff? If you've seen it a bunch, we could double a Westerns chat with the Sober Second Thoughts thread. :)

My Little Chickadee (1940)
"I wonder what kind of a woman you really are."
"Too bad, but I can't give out samples."

It's Mrs. 1SO who recently discovered and got into Mae West. As an actress, she has all the range of an SNL character. Every joke is about her sexuality and every line is delivered with her eyes rolling upward. That said, she is occasionally funny and I like that she's the credited screenwriter on most of her movies. (Mrs. 1SO likes the bold confidence, something she's only seen in early Bette Midler and doesn't think anyone today could even pull off for a single film.)

"Is this a game of chance?"
"Not the way I play it, no."

This is one of her most popular films because it teams her with W.C. Fields (the only other credited writer on this script), who also comes off like a somewhat less funny SNL character brought to feature length. I've always thought of this as a buddy film, like Hope & Crosby, but it's really Mae West's film with Fields doing is thing in isolated sketches mostly on the side. They share very few scenes, though they do play well together, surprising for two people who don't like to share a scene with anybody. It has some good laughs, but is overall not that funny. (I'd sooner recommend almost any Hope/Crosby Road movie.) The wife had fun with it, which is really what matters here.

I'm going to do re-watches on the 5 Leone's at least. Those videos I posted the other day, in the Leone thread, piqued my interest in seeing them again.
