We're talking critically-acclaimed directors that are well canonized. Please only include people you've given a fair shake. For me, I'm going with a 5 film minimum but use your own judgment for what seems fair to you.

1. John Ford (seen 19 -- exception that proves the rule: My Darling Clementine)
2. Jean-Luc Godard (seen 32 -- exceptions that prove the rule: Band of Outsiders, Vivre Sa Vie)
3. Charlie Chaplin (seen 11 -- exception that proves the rule: The Circus)
4. Jim Jarmusch (seen 8 )
5. Guillermo del Toro (seen 5)

Really, the team of Jean-Marie Straub and Daničle Huillet should top this list, but they seem a little too obscure. Also Cameron Crowe and Ron Howard, though I don't know if either counts as "critically-acclaimed" enough.

1. Terrance Malik (Seen 4)
2. Quentin Tarantino (Seen 6, exception: Jackie Brown)
3. Alfred Hitchcock (Seen 6)
4. Wes Anderson (Seen 7, exception: Fantastic Mr. Fox)
5. Jeff Nichols (Seen 4)

Usually 1 or 2 duds is enough to put me off a director (Lynch, Von Trier, etc), so it's hard to come up with a list.

Ahem, It's Terrence Malick.

Also, I would haven guessed you as a QT fan. Guess that's where we share common ground as I also only really like Jackie Brown.

I think I find his films too mean spirited generally. But Max Cherry and Jackie Brown are characters I can totally root for. :)

Off the top of my head I'd say:

1. David Lynch (9)
2. Jean-Luc Goddard (6)
3. Paul Thomas Anderson (7)
4. Federico Fellini (4)
5. Akira Kurosawa (12)

1. Ang Lee (seen 7, the exception that proves the rule-- Life of Pi)
Lee is a wonderful workman, but his choice of scripts tends to be dull and his art design without imagination.  Life of Pi is certainly the exception in both of these regards.

2. Brian Singer (seen 6, the exception that proves the rule-- X-Men: First Class)
He takes imaginative ideas and fills them full of wooden performances and action without character.  First Class is an exception in this regard as well.

3. Woody Allen (seen 13, the exception that proves the rule-- Crimes and Misdemeanors)
Generally a great director with a lot of imagination and insight... but I just don't find him funny.  I yawn through all of his comedies, and his characters are stereotypes that are filled with Allen-isms.  Witty, but not smart.  I like C and M, mostly because he's more interested in the big idea rather than his wit, so it allows masters like Landau to do what he does best.

I would hug you for that list... But it had Nolan in it for some reason. :P
