I've absolutely hated all three movies I've seen by him.
Masterpiece (100-91) | Classic (90-80) | Entertaining (79-69) | Mediocre (68-58) | Cinemuck (57-21) | Crap (20-0)

I'm sure Mario Bava will be on my final list. He's more acclaimed in the niche of Horror, but there he's a titan and I've seen many, liking none and despising a few.

I can't really fathom a person disliking both Memento and The Prestige. All the others I can get and even one of the two. So I'm holding out hope that one of them isn't in your four.

@1SO: Claire Denis goes with a few others like Wong Kar-Wai that I didn't ultimately put on mine because they seemed less significant in the greatest directors conversations.

Matthew Vaughn directed X-Men: First Class.

Ah, I see that Singer produced it, not directed.  Well, that makes it easier.  No exceptions for Singer.

Michael Powell - I find everything moldy and creepy, even when characters are having fun.
Clint Eastwood - A fine craftsman. It's just the stories he picks never appeal to me.
Baz Luhrmann - He could still win me over. He just hasn't till now.
Lasse Hallström - Even the titles turn me off.

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Ron Howard, Edgar Wright, Damien Chazelle, Ava DuVernay...

Sometimes stylistic, but they all make very middlebrow, easy-to-digest films. Fine diversions, but I doubt it would be all that interesting to talk to any of these directors about their views on the world.

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu
Guillermo DelToro
Darren Aronofsky

All of them seem to focus on aesthetics rather than good storytelling. Maybe this says something about myself.

Ron Howard (Exception: Solo: A Star Wars Story)

I thought about Ron Howard, because so many of his films are so mediocre.  But I would have too many exceptions:
Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Frost and Nixon, Parenthood.  I can't dismiss him.

I love that you selected Ron Howard, but I LOVE that your exception is Solo.
