Jeff Goldblum's best performance. Laurence Fishburne was new to me when I saw this, and I was very impressed. Definitely an over looked film, glad you pointed it out. One of the best of this sub-genre (drugs and cops that is).
"Best" is a strong word, Dave! But I would easily put it in his top two or three performances without having to think it through.
It maybe a strong word, but as I have not seen the Fly, I have not found any to better it, and I have found a lot that are way worse. What would you rank as his top performances?
Okay - I just reviewed his filmography and am saddened by how unimpressive is the totality of it all. I like Goldblum a lot, and feel like he should be used more in better films.
That having been said, my top three Jeff Goldblum performances are:
The FlyDeep CoverInto the NightHe is also very good in
The Big Chill, but that role is a pretty thankless one (he's the "shallow" friend among all the crunchy-granola deep thinkers) and
Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
I think his talent is pretty discernible in how he turns in some very memorable performances in some very minor roles. To wit:
Next Stop, Greenwich VillageThe Right StuffBetween the LinesAnnie HallAnd the only performance of his that I've actively disliked is in the film
Powder. It's as if he is doing a bad Jeff Goldblum impersonation - really punching up his "quirkiness" factor.
