It's a cautionary tale about manipulating others with cautionary tales.
I never noticed how common this is for movies to do, but I just watched Jojo Rabbit, which does this. It made me think of films as diverse as Dogtooth, Tangled and Emir Kusturica's Underground.

Arrested Development had an episode with this premise too.

It's not like West Wing Weekly. The show is called Below the Line and it tells about the production aspects, like painting Tobias blue, Gob eating the key and Kitty Sanchez's hair. The host also mentions my cameo at the end of "Good Grief".

Kuroneko



I can name that movie in three words. Glidey, Gauzy Ghosts.


Kuroneko is the antithesis of Onibaba's blunt, brute force, where sophistication lures in the unsuspecting, and stately bamboo replaces rushing reeds. Even lust is elevated and transformed into a sacrificial love poem. Nonetheless, all these tea ceremony niceties may fool the wandering Samurai, but it's still a cat eat dog world, where revenge may start out as a cry for justice, but in the end becomes a lament of be careful what you wish for.

I had years between my first viewing of Onibaba and watching Kuroneko. It's fascinating how they're clearly the work of the same director while being tonally very different. (The mark of an Artist.) I prefer the blunt, brute force of Onibaba, but I also think that script is crafted with more layers. That's how I see it anyways.

I see it similarly. The emotions in Onibaba are more earthy, complex, while Kuroneko plays a few notes of vengeance and loss.
