Overlooked war films: The Cranes Are Flying

1958 Russian film that won at Cannes.  Criterion has a version out - highly recommended.  One of the most visually stunning films I can remember seeing - especially considering when it was made.

Has anyone else seen this?

I've seen it. I first found out about it because I loved Soy Cuba so much (which I think is even more visually stunning) and they were both directed by Mikhail Kalatozov. If you haven't seen Soy Cuba, do yourself a favor and check it out.

I think it's very good. The love aspect of the story is great, but I think the war aspect is a little weak.

Btw, not that I would ever discourage anyone from buying a Criterion DVD, but you can get Chinese DVDs of the film on Ebay for about five bucks.
Films are smoother than life. They don't just
grind to a halt. They glide on, like trains in the
night. For people like you and me, our happiness

I agree, if you have the chance, definitely check out both of these films... Soy Cuba is one of the most visually stunning movies I have ever seen (actually made my top5 back in april), and Cranes Are Flying is also really good, both highly recommended...
