Filmspots 2019: Official Nominations
« on: February 14, 2020, 11:59:14 AM »
This will be a countdown of the films that factored most heavily in the voting. For each film, I'll list out any nominations it received plus where it ranked in other categories where it received at least two votes and placed within the top twenty.

Please feel free to comment in this thread during the countdown. I'll be spacing out the list to allow conversation to develop.

Wooohoo, this is always exciting.

I'll start things up by talking about the films I'm responsible for getting on the list above:

The Bear's Famous Invasion of Sicily is a charming adaptation of Dino Buzzatti's strange fairytale, which is allegedly about fascism but I never really saw it this way, though certainly it is about the corruption inherent to power. With talking bears, in a lovely minimalist animation style that I think is kind of similar to the one in Klaus (haven't seen that one yet), very angular and simple but beautiful backgrounds.

Children of the Sea is a decent Japanese animated film that is most notable for having an excellent Joe Hisaishi score, I briefly reviewed it here.

Conviction is a judicial drama I talked about here, I voted for Gourmet in the lead performance.

And I expected to find Roubaix, une lumière/Oh Mercy on this list, but I guess someone else saw it and voted for it ?

Bisbee '17
And here I thought that was my popular choice in the documentary section.

Ruben Brandt, Collector
I almost left animation emtpy because there wasn't anything interesting this year. But this was at least okay-ish and I thought I had seen someone else FYCing it.

Pleasantly surprised that apparently someone else had the Schanelec on their ballot, even if it didn't make the cut.

These surprised me the most on this list. Would have figured a little more traction. How many total ballots?

The following films appeared on multiple ballots but not with enough concentrated support to factor in the voting
  • Bacurau
  • Bombshell
  • Cats
  • Doctor Sleep
  • Downton Abbey
  • Freaks
  • Happy Death Day 2U
  • Knives and Skin
  • The Peanut Butter Falcon
  • Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker
  • Zombieland: Double Tap
Doctor Sleep appeared on three ballots, Star Wars on four, and the rest just on two.

I'm sad that Doctor Sleep didn't earn a Best Surprise nomination, but I'm relieved I don't hav to watch Cats.

Ah, I figured re: Oh Mercy/Roubaix, une lumière. A film in two halves, both of which I really liked: the first is a moody environmental* noir centered on Roschdy Zem as this weathered, determined, kind but tough cop trying to make it work France's toughest city, and the second one is basically a series of interrogation scenes trying to untangle a specific crime that occured, with Léa Seydoux and Sara Forestier as the main suspects (and Zem doing the interviewing of course). Zem and Seydoux are great (though it's Forestier who got a nom at the César, and she's good too), and Desplechin adds a lyricism to the first half in particular which made the film really work on another level for me.

Sad that Bacurau isn't a contender for Foreign Film, I guess it hasn't been released in the US yet ? I certainly did not expect Mendonça Filho to go for a Carpenter vibe after Aquarius, but he sure did, and it work so well.

Motherless Brooklyn I'm alone in loving I know, but at least people might recognize the greatness of its impeecable cool jazz score... I guess not.

*not in the "saving the planet" way, more the "this is an environment/milieu, let's discover it"
