So hard to come up with the best plan of attack when I know there's a time limit and I'm not going to get to everything I'm curious about. Plus I don't want to clog up a Group Marathon with a whole lot of me. I made a complete Watchlist which came to 133 titles, arranged that list by Letterboxd Rating and then by Popularity. I'm aiming for about 30 titles posting what's up ahead in my Batches of 5.

Is the whole objective just to watch as many westerns in March as you can and write about them? And...why March? Just wondering. Sounds like fun, but I have quite a bit of research to do, then.

I'll be exploring the fare on YouTube this year. The amount of stuff they have now is mind boggling! Hoping to find some pearls amongst the swine.

And I was looking at my list which is featured on Chuck's recommendation post. If I get a chance in the next couple of days, I'll update that list. I've seen a lot of westerns since I compiled that back in 2013

Not as many as you can, it's not a competition. We just set the month aside to perhaps giving some consideration to genre Blindspots, much like how we do a Horror Marathon every October.

'Why March' is a complicated answer in 'Marathons: General Discussion' and I think elsewhere. I believe we saw it - and Music of May - as a time when most people had caught up with the best of the previous year, locking in their Filmspot picks, and there wasn't much excitement on the big screen.

Cool, I'm definitely in.

I have seen, like, almost no westerns. Blazing Saddles a looooong time ago, can hardly remember it. Dead Man, Django, Cohen Brothers' True Grit. Oh, and The Assassination of Jesse James by...

Any recommendations? I'm looking to see a couple classic westerns and a couple revisionist westerns. With my research right now, the only one I think I'll see for sure is Johnny Guitar.

------

Edit: These are the five I have come up with so far.

I'm thinking of starting with two John Ford films, since I know he's super important within the genre, and as an American film-maker in general. I'm a little worried about the racism, but I'm starting with:
1. The Searchers
2. My Darling Clementine

Then, the revisionist westerns:
3. Johnny Guitar
4. Once Upon a Time in the West
5. Meek's Cutoff.

If I'm missing something maybe more important or just better, I'll take any feedback!

Fire a gun off in here and you'll hit somebody with recommendations. Probably good ones too. The podcast just did an episode about Rio Bravo. Thinking about the ones most often brought up as Classic around here, let me give you a formula:
John Wayne + John Ford: Stagecoach
John Wayne - John Ford: Rio Bravo
John Ford - John Wayne: My Darling Clementine

Revisionist Westerns are tougher to recommend, especially to someone new to the genre. Seems you want to avoid deconstructions like The Wild Bunch, Unforgiven and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance for now. I immediately thought of Silverado (1985), which is like a Western buffet, cramming in every expected plot or The Quick and the Dead (1995) which has its problems, but features a stellar supporting cast and the slickest camerawork ever used in its orgy of showdowns. And if you want something that's more long, slow and absorbing, then consider The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

And if I don't say it somebody else will. Sergio Leone was a master of the genre, and if you really want to see something very Western, completely badass and increasingly epic, check out...
For a Few Dollars More (1965)
The Good The Bad and the Ugly (1966)
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

We had some overlap in the edits of my post and your response to my post. Looks like Once Upon a Time in the West is a go.

The only reason I was looking up revisionists westerns is because I'm terrified that I'm going to end up with standard westerns that are super racist and/or misogynistic. That's a preconceived notion of mine, and in reading up a little on westerns, I think it's pretty well founded. How to I avoid or get around that?
