Something a little different from all the best film/performance/direction etc lists that are doing the rounds at the moment.
I just picked the top 5(well 10) moments of movies released in 2006. My criteria is pretty much, just the scenes that I vividly recall and remember enjoying, or realising it was something new.
10. The Star Spangled Banner in Shortbus.
The most bizarre, original and dare I steal a quote from Sam? and say Patriotic scenes I've ever seen.
9. The "Let them eat cake" tabloid rumour scene in Marie Antoinette.
I didn't like the film, and it's one I shall revisit eventually as I do love Sofia, but this moment stood out for me. It's nothing remarkable, but I thought it was a nice way of dispelling myth.
8. Chris Gardner gets the job in Pursuit Of Happyness.
I don't care how cheesy it is, I love Will Smith and I'm a sucker for the feel good moment (as you'll see later).
7. The pre credit flash forward scene in Mission Impossible 3.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman is incredible, the scene is great, not really a lot else I can say about it.
6. The training montage in Rocky Balboa
I'm also a sucker for nostalgia.
5. Marshall win their first home game since the accident in We Are Marshall.
I told you I was a sucker for the feel good moments, and especially when they are in sports movies.
4. The Christain Bale reveal in The Prestige
What can I say? I'm an idiot and was totally fooled by his trick. While I felt afterwards that I should've guessed it, I was far too caught up in the film to think logically, and just let it all unfold in front of my eyes.
3. The pre-credits scene in Casino Royale.
My God is Daniel Craig good. I wasn't sure at first, but that few minute scene with Bond becoming a 00 just completely sold him, and the film, to me and I never looked back.
2. The scene in the Departed where Di Caprio's character takes apart the police pyschologist.
Leo is fantastic here, and he just deconstructs her character fantastically. I loved this scene.
1. The ceasefire scene in Children Of Men.
Without a doubt, the most beautiful scene of the year. The joyous sound, the moment of hope and the sheer feeling behind it made it the runaway winner for me.
