Best Music of 2021
« on: January 01, 2022, 03:42:15 AM »
Post your Top 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, (or whatever floats your boat) albums and/or tracks of 2021.

I love end-of-year list-making.

I never listen to nearly as much as I'd like to, but these albums all had a definite effect on me, and naming a top ten was no problem at all. A few musical trends for me in 2021:
*Dipped my toe into some world music, and I think I'll do even more in 2022.
*Tried a lot of forms of electronic music this year with a lot of great results, though most were not from 2021. My favorite new discovery/not new album is Does It Look Like I'm Here? - by Emeralds.
*Sarah Davachi's Antiphonals opened me up to the possibilities of minimalist music, as well as music as a meditation.

I'm not hating, just trying to spark a little conversation.

Albums I shall work on next, but here are my Top 10 Songs of 2021:

1. “Off the Grid” – Kanye West feat. Playboi Carti and Fivio Foreign
2. “traitor” – Olivia Rodrigo
3. “Gang Signs” – Freddie Gibbs feat. ScHoolboy Q
4. “CAN’T FEEL MY FACE” – SosMula feat. Jasiah

7. “Case Closed” – Key Glock and Young Dolph
8. “Blue Banisters” – Lana Del Rey
9. “HEAVY METAL” – Paris Texas
10. “Bird With A Broken Wing” - Weezer

I tried Olivia Rodrigo's album for about three songs, one of which was traitor. There is nothing new/original/interesting in it that I can hear. What's the selling point here?

AND WHERE ARE YOUR TOP TEN ALBUMS!  :D

Albums

1. XOXO (Jeon Somi)
2. Vince Staples (Vince Staples)
3. Tempo (Dom La Nena)
4. Carnage (Nick Cave and Warren Ellis)
5. Doomin' Sun (Bachelor)
6. Call Me If You Get Lost (Tyler the Creator)
7. Jubilee (Japanese Breakfast)
8. Sometimes I Might Be Introvert (Little Simz)
9. The Ballad of Dood and Juanita (Sturgill Simpson)
10. Rap? (Tierra Whack)

Probably.

I haven't listened to the Little Simz, and admit that I have pigeonholed British rap music to an extent. I listened to some of Little Simz's previous album, and it seemed a bit lifeless, the flow sounding like...most every other flow from (Meta-)critic-favored British rappers. What is so great about Sometimes I Might Be Introvert? I'm seeing it on tons of Top 10's, but haven't even gotten the motivation up to check it out.

The Vince Staples album was a big disappointment for me. Big fan of the more thoro Summertime '06 or experimental Big Fish Theory, and he's got several excellent EP's. I had a hard time getting through the new one, the production is just so boring. In a way, reminded me of the most recent Danny Brown, just no spark, nothing to grab me.

The Tyler keeps growing on me. It starts so hard! And then moves into commonplace relationship stuff...too much.

STILL gotta get to Carnage.

There's an emotional directness to her lyrics that are like a confession. Everything I've heard so far has been a slow ballad. Does she have anything uptempo?

Seth Abramson on Rodrigo's album: "It's so artless it's experimental." Simple, diaristic, no irony, no self-consciousness. It's metamodernist music (post-postmodern) according to him.

Peep the track "I Love You, I hate You."

I dig her lyrical content and where she goes. Everything is a step up from her previous work.

I don't see Vince Staples in most top 10s for hip hop. I get it. But this is my s**t  8)

I liked Nas Magic more than King's Disease 2 which I thought was dope, too.

Rodrigo's songwriting, when it is at its best, takes a traditional break-up album and doesn't hide the resentment or aspects that make one seem selfish and insecure. It casts blame and internalizes it. There's a fragility and, as the title indicates, sourness to what I think are the best songs on it.

Couldn't get in to that Little Simz album at all though.

Was going to plug away at albums tonight, but have to do my Blue Tint 350 raffles this evening first.
