Siraa Fil-Mina (Dark Waters) - Having recently rewatched the Merle Oberon noir, that makes two movies in the past month with the same title. This one is a heady melodrama starring a young Omar Sharif as a traveller who returns home to his girl but gets manipulated by a shady business associate. Much the same cast as Chahine's earlier (and Sharif's debut) Siraa Fil-Wadi. Some terrific shots throughout and in general it's plotted well. The story is formulaic but the social commentary has some bite, and there's a couple of effective bits of humor. It's a little hard to get behind Sharif's misogynistic, violence-prone protagonist, though. Faten Hamamah as the love interest is the real star here. Rating: Good (75)
