Top 5 Dance Movies
« on: March 05, 2007, 10:39:13 AM »
I was going through my DVD collection recently and I noticed that I have a lot of dance movies... sure, most of them are terrible movies on the whole, but I've been obsessed with dance movies since I was a kid (the first movie my mother took me to as a child was Electric Boogaloo).  I hope I'm not alone in loving these movies... come on people, don't leave me hanging here!

[For the purposes of this list, I'm trying to leave out true "Musicals" like Singing In the Rain and such...]

Top 5
1. Breakin'/Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo/Beat Street (I'm letting these three share the top spot)
2. White Nights (Mikhail Baryshnikov AND Gregory Hines, I dare you not to like this movie!)
3. Center Stage
4. Dirty Dancing
5. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Honorable Mentions: Flashdance, Step Up, Footloose, The Full Monty, American Anthem, Lambada, and Fast Forward

Flashdance gets my vote from that lot - I love Giorgio Moroder soundtracks. Eurgh, I hate the Full Monty.

The only other dance film I can think of is Showgirls.

Too bad you're not including musicals - that Make 'Em Laugh sequence from Singing in the Rain (in fact, most of the film,) is simply awesome.

Will Power?

Anyway, (is this cheating?) my vote goes to the video for New Order's Confusion. See here:

No "Turning Point?"  Guess you're all too young to remember....Also Billy Elliot and Fame.  Gotta love Fame. Also the parade scene in Ferris Bueller is classic.

Great call on Strictly Ballroom, I completely forgot it... Chorus Line, too :)

*I also forgot to add The Company to my list.  Not Altman's best, but I really love the ballet routines.

The Company I liked.  It's not classic Altman but an enjoyable one.  Still better than Pret-a-Porte.  I actually liked Center Stage as well despite a few flaws.

My top 5:

1. Strictly Ballroom
2. Shall We Dance (Japanese Version though the American version is OK due to Stanley Tucci)
3. The Full Monty
4. White Nights (Yes, I do like to see Baryshnikov & the late Gregory Hines dance)
5. Singin' in the Rain

I don't like Dirty Dancing.  It's the most overrated, overplayed film ever made.  I will put Baby in a corner dammit!!!!!

So many posts and no mention of The Red Shoes, one of the greatest films ever, dancing or not.

No dance movies, please... exception to the rule being Strictly Ballroom. I like The Full Monty - dancing included - but I don't count it as a dance movie.  8)
