I'm sure there's a very good reason but I'm going to ask anyways, why is the quality so low? A 10 year old cellphone could take a better picture than that...

It's better in its full size, but you also have to take into account the environment (and the trip), so the lenses will be pretty heavy duty. There are a bunch of cameras, also, some of which will probably have better capabilities. And the nature of the lens here, being super wide to get everything, will necessarily lead to a pretty shallow depth of focus.

The photos are produced in very low resolution because it takes so long to transmit them.

Speaking of bugs, I recently found some old butterfly photos of mine... if only they looked as incredible as those ones :o

Those are still pretty incredible!

When you get that close it's easy to see why characters like Mothman came about. :)

Thanks,  the quality is still hit and miss but I'm getting the hang of it. I look forward to these little guys every year.

I recently retired my DSLR and switched to a smaller mirrorless system and getting myself back into the hobby. Some pics I've snapped this year:

From a local bookstore:

A closer look at it:

And this one I just snapped while doing daddy duty over the weekend:
