Donovan > Bob Dylan

I thought that was current revisionist/contrarian prevailing opinion?

I would wager the vast majority of people have no idea who Donovan even is (was?), so no.

I myself don't know him all that well (I do like Season of the Witch), but I seriously doubt his oeuvre is in any way comparable to Dylan's in variety and ambition. Am I wrong ?

At first I was pretty indignant about this. But I can't begrudge the preference. Donovan wrote poppier, catchier tunes and has a better (arguably) voice. I myself hold these qualities in high regard, and I like a lot of Donovan myself.

Still, I would argue one should not judge Dylan by his "greatest hits". I think his work lends itself better to a more immersed listening experience.

So I’ve come to the decision that Leonard Cohen eclipsed them both between 1984 and 1992 leaving the Dylan/Donovan debate a bit of a foot note.

So I am debating should I go watch Bob Dylan live in August. I have never seen him before but then I can't say I was ever a fan. I think he rights some pretty great songs and listened to a few of his albums but never somebody that I got really into like I did Neil Young. But then, this likely my only chance to see, not that many acts come through Singapore

From chatter I have heard you have a 50/50 chance of seeing one of his good shows. I saw him about 12 years ago and left before it finished. He sat on the far left side of the stage so at least a third of the crowd could not see him which was really annoying (and pissed the crowd off big time). But the biggest problem was the quality of the playing from the band he was with. For a group of what I expected to be top end professionals they played together like a high school garage band, very sloppy.

My company solved my dilemma for me, I will be traveling so no chance to attend.
