That M83 album is great.  The last thing I bought, well, an album I already have months ago is NIN's The Slip in a limited edition CD/DVD set.  I have copy #163,039 out of the 250,000 copies that are available all over the world.

A quarter of a million qualifies as a limited edition? In what world? Would be more honest to call that a "numbered edition", I think.

Actually, you're right.  Well, it's only limited edition because the CD includes a DVD of five rehearsal clips.  Three of them were seen from Pitchfork.

It's basically a cynical marketing ploy.

OK, see, that makes it a "special" edition (maybe). "Limited" ought rightly to mean, "We didn't produce very many of these--not nearly enough to meet the expected demand." For an ancillary release like this, 250,000 copies wouldn't be limited even if we were talking about some megastar. And we're not; we're talking about Nine Inch Nails.

I'll bet there are still unsold copies of this "limited edition" available. By definition, I think, that means it's misnamed.

It's a tried and tested marketing ploy.

Yeah but 29,000 copies sold in the U.S. to debut at #13 for an unsigned indie band isn't bad.

You know George Lucas is an independent filmmaker as well.  Fox just handles distribution.

Like Why?'s Alopecia, which was mentioned a few posts ago.

Some recently listened-to albums: the latest from The Hold Steady and Wolf Parade, both disappointing, though the latter much more than the former; and some good ambient, One Touch of Nature, by On Earth.

Also, not new, but recently downloaded a better-quality version of Deep Purple's Live in Japan. So good.
