I don't expect my opinion to change much, but I'll withhold until I've re-watched it. Maybe I'll watch the TV version as well.

The key to Fanny and Alexander for me was the Whitmanesque speech that Gustav gave at the end in the "pink" celebration where he talks about the little world they're a part of.  Wasn't Bergman saying that by watching the little world (of the Ekdahls) we were seeing the whole world in them?

Of course, all the film elements were perfect, but who would expect less after seeing all these perfect Bergman films?

Great marathon!

For good measure, I finally got around to rewatching it. Of course it was fantastic. Really pointless to say that anymore. While I do think it's a fabulous film, I still say it isn't quite on par with his very best. Light and color were fantastic, as was the acting.

I particularly identify with the way he chooses to bring in the ghosts of the dead. I've always been a supporter of straight realism standing in for the supernatural, whenever possible. The use of puppetry and other "tiny worlds" was really expertly handled as a thematic symbol.

More than anything, this really reminds me why I want to watch the television version. There's so much more there, and I am certain it will only get better. Great end to the marathon.

A fantastic closing of the marathon and actually his career (not counting Saraband). It didn't hit me as hard as some of his other films did. It felt much lighter & hopeful than some of his other films possibly because of the children, but It contains the power that only a director like Bergman can deliver. Again, an amazing looking film drenched in color and fantastic production design. A beautiful film!
