Empire of the Sun ... ?
« on: July 27, 2007, 12:36:03 AM »
Unfortunately I wasn't completely cognizant at the time of the release to know how well accepted this film was. I saw it once a few years back and recently popped it in for another watch. From the few recent reviews I've run into I myself would qualify it as a somewhat underrated movie. I greatly enjoyed this peice and think it's about time everyone got around to watching it again.
I don't know, I'm making this up as I go.

It's really a great movie.  I've got it as the third best film of 1987 (behind The Princess Bride and Broadcast News).

And thus began my crush on Christian Bale.  Yes, I was his age at the time, so it's not pedophilia.

I regard this as one of Spielberg's best films. Nowadays it gets sort of lost in the shuffle of Indiana Jones and the rest of his work in the 80's, which is too bad. But the people that know this movie really love it- it's an underdog, and that's just one more thing that I like about it.

I always associate The Last Emperor with Empire of the Sun with Hope and Glory.  I think they all came out within the same year.  They all involved WWII, and they all dealt with a young boy losing his innocence.  They're also 3 of my favorite movies.  The Last Emperor may be my first movie that was over 3 hours that I liked.

Thus my love affair with Christian Bale gained new meaning. I loved his passion for aviation and the pilots in the film. It was something that really reminded me of my own childhood.

Since I haven't seen The Color Purple I can't say this for sure, but Empire of the Sun is Spielberg's first serious/dramatic epic and should rank alongside Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, and Munich as his most important (and best?) films.

...and Hope and Glory is wonderful.

I recently rewatched Empire and was pretty underwhelmed.  And I'm just not sure about this Christian Bale guy.  I think I'm over him.
