1. Good, the bad, the ugly
2. Once upon a time in the West
3. Wild Bunch
4. Outlaw Joesy Whales
5. For a Few Dollars More
6. Unforgiven
7. Fistfull of Dollars
8. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
9. Rio Bravo
10. Magnificent Seven
11. Blazing Saddles
12. Tombstone
13. Open Range
14. Wyatt Earp

If I could include Dances with Wolves, I'd throw that in my top 5.... I almost consider it a Western

1.) Once Upon A Time In The West
2.) The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
3.) For A Few Dollars More
4.) Outlaw Joesy Whales
5.) Unforgiven

It's a very Eastwood centered list but what can I say, he is in the greatest Western movies ever made, imho. Plus, I simply prefer Leone over Ford. This list might change as there are still many classic Western I haven't watched yet.

1) Treasure of the Siera Madre
2)True Grit
3)Unforgiven
4)Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
5)The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

I need a ruling on #1. I consider it a western on setting alone but others might not. If so then move everyone up one and put High Plains Drifter at 5.

2. Unforgiven (1992)

And yeah, I know, I know ..... it's not fashionable for those who study Western films to like this movie. Luckily, for me, I'm one of those who never studied.

Huh?  It's one of the most academically interesting Westerns ever made.  Like pajetta said, it's the logical end of the genre.  Well, that or Deadwood.

I agree its like Unforgiven tells the end story of every gunslinger in the western genre.

Great topic.  I should re-watch or view some of the classics for the first time but here's my Top 5 but this should be counted as a brainstorm.  This is something I'd likely play with down the road.  This could be an interesting topic in general as one could make arguments for some Kurosawa films or Star Wars or Alien even though they might not be "proper" westerns in the minds of many.

1.  The Searchers
2.  Once Upon a Time in the West
3.  The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
4.  The Proposition
5.  Back to the Future III

Liberty Valance did it earlier than Unforgiven.
