I am definitely strongly considering Hitchcock. Thanks, oneaprilday.

Like I said, the guy has pretty good taste. We agree about a lot of movies. He really likes In Bruges, Zodiac, Boogie Nights. Doesn't care for The Usual Suspects, Memento, There Will Be Blood.

I do like the Hitchcock suggestion. How about Sullivan's Travels? M?

The other ones are probably good, too.

Young Mr. Lincoln; there's a marathon thread waiting for you afterwards. Also, it's the best of the bunch.

Alright, so say I know someone who really likes and appreciates movies a lot. He has a pretty solid understanding of them and generally good taste. However, this person claims to hate old movies. He hasn't really seen very many, but he can't get excited about them. What is the one "classic" film that will get him to start loving old movies (most likely black & white)?

Body and Soul, The Ox-Bow Incident, Stalag 17, 12 Angry Men, The Hustler, or maybe just Bambi.

The Third Man
I second that. The Third Man would probably do it.

Just a suggestion, but... Double Indemnity?

Yi-Yi. If it's anywhere near as good as A Brighter Summer Day it'll be pretty good indeed.

They are probably good but Yi Yi is wonderful.
