I would say Ikiru is a misleading place tostart for Kurosawa. Seven Samurai or The Hidden Fortress is a better place to start with Kurosawa.

Or Rashomon!
-Le Chiffre: You changed your shirt, Mr Bond. I hope our little game isn't causing you to perspire.

-James Bond: A little. But I won't consider myself to be in trouble until I start weeping blood.

That's my favorite but I figure a samurai film is the best way to be eased into Kurosawa. Hey! Yojimbo!

I think it's misleading to claim that you need to start with a samurai film. As long as you watch all three of those films, it doesn't matter which you watch first.

The Saddest Music in the World, Talk to Her, or Ikiru?

Keep in mind any of these would be my first film from each director, and that Ikiru is probably the least likely to happen because I am only about 65% sure that I can get a copy of it.

I would watch Saddest Music in the World first. You will never see another movie like it. Unless you watch more Maddin.

Could you please suggest a good double feature out of these? (I'm not 100% sure if I'll actually get through two, though, as I am strangely tired today)

Playtime
The Red Shoes
My Neighbor the Yamadas
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Brief Encounter
Love in the Afternoon
The Lady from Shanghai
The Bow (Kim Ki-Duk)

Red Shoes and Yamadas... Or substitute Yamadas with Lady from Shanghai.
