Movie Buzz (2007-2010)
« on: October 31, 2007, 12:00:39 PM »
Ok, so instead of making a new thread for every movie that is announced or comes out soon, why not collect  bits of news in one thread. You can always open up another thread if there's need for more discussion.

So..I'll go ahead:

-Peter Iliff apparently managed to secure a deal for a sequel to Point Break which he wrote some 15 years ago. (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=38931)

-Daniel Craig will do at least 4 more (!) Bond films (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3i11356e5762144f434339ff37e128990b)

-They finally managed to get the X-Files thing sorted out and start shooting the second movie in December (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=38875)

A Point Break 2?

If Keanu is involved I'm there.  The very thought of it makes me want to shoot a gun up into the air and say "Aaaahhhh"

Daniel Craig was good as Bond so that's pretty cool.  It will be interesting to see more of the "new" direction of Bond films.  Not sure I like the more realistic Bond - I did always like the fun gadgets he used to have - and let him bang more than one chick per film for the love of god....

How would a writers' strike effect a film with a writer/director (assuming the Teamsters not crossing their picket lines doesn't shut everything down)?  Could Chris Carter continue to direct the film but not write it?  IMDb says that he gets a story credit, but Frank Spotnitz gets both story and written by credits, would it somehow be different if Carter were to get a written by credit?  Would it matter that the production is in Canada?

I've heard that all the television networks have six or seven scripts for their shows, but how would this effect a series where writers actually appear in the show?  Could Tina Fey act in an episode of 30 Rock that she wrote?  Would her creator title prevent her from acting in an episode that she didn't write?  I suppose The Office could get by without the characters played by its actors who are also writers, but not 30 Rock.

Well, The Office shut down because Carrell and other WGA members refused to cross the picket lines, Tina Fey wouldn't cross the lines either, but potentially a showrunner could do their non-writing duties, they've pretty uniformly declared that they won't (at least until the producers come back to the negotiating table), but, for example, JJ Abrams has started directing the Star Trek movie, so it could be done.  I know that it's a possibility that the showrunners who refuse to do their "non-writing" work could be sued... hope that helps.

I was talking to my friend the other day, he's a screenwriter on strike and said that you'll only notice a deficit in TV (i.e. the Office shutting down) but so many of the studios back logged screenplays because they saw this coming.  You should see it affecting films come summer, but by then the back log of material will be in post or in theaters covering for the strike and the strike itself will have ended.  So, basically it's not going to affect movies.
