If a rise in the minimum wage is bad now then you have to argue that the previous time it was raised was bad also. It wasn't - wages had stagnated and it brought many out of poverty. Worrying about small companies going out of the business because of this is the same exact worry that Republicans have about big companies leaving this country because their taxes were raised. That thread of thought inevitably leads to eugenics or mass sterilization because it removes the focus from protecting working class and to protecting the upper class. And this doesn't even take into account that around 80% of small businesses fail within the first 5 years or so. So Bondo - if we cannot give them a livable wage, then what do you suggest we do with the poor?

But to be honest, we're just recycling the same old arguments. You can meet me in a different thread about this.

Liberals aren't evil, they're just very naive and ignorant about the tactics Democrats and Republicans use in order to keep PAC donor dollars rolling in, main one being never criticizing the Military for increasingly excess spending then complaining about the deficit when Medicare 4 All starts polling high in popularity. Democrats are too cushy. They don't want to do anything. They know they can bully you into voting for them on your fear of the Republicans alone. So they will continue to use that as their sole reason to vote for them while they more or less keep things the same.

Never forget that it wasn't a bunch of politicians that just suddenly became moralistic out of the blue then signed the Civil Rights Act, it was the threat of increasing violence from the public in not only peaceful protests, but city-wide violent protests and labor strikes.

I don't actually. If I use that logic, you must think a minimum wage of $25/hr or $50/hr would be even better and have no deleterious effects. The economic literature suggests that 60% of median wage is the sweet spot. Nationally that would suggest a $14/hr minimum wage. But the country is a big and diverse place and we don't have a national labor market (mobility is at very low levels...people aren't moving to better jobs...part of this is a lot of the place with better jobs don't have enough housing). Thus if we aren't willing to pass a national minimum wage that is set based on local conditions, I think we probably have to go a bit on the lower end, like $12/hr. I'll post this link with some of the basis for this...I'm not as rosy as he is that monopsony power means low wage areas will be fine.

So Bondo - if we cannot give them a livable wage, then what do you suggest we do with the poor?

The thing about doing livable wage entirely through wages, is that doesn't help people who don't have jobs. I thought it was the democratic socialists who decry wage slavery and the notion that people should have to work to survive. Instead, as I mentioned in my post, I use government transfers like EITC and Child Tax Credit (or if we were to adopt new policies, a UBI/NIT) to supplement wages to provide a livable floor. Aside from leaving out the unemployed (who may be less able to find jobs on the margin with a too high minimum wage), higher minimum wages will tend to be passed on through higher costs to some extent and a lot of that burden will fall on people at the bottom. If you instead do only part of the work with minimum wage and supplement with government transfer, paid for by taxes that fall higher up the distribution, you do better for the most people.

Plus, I'm just a big supporter of increasing housing supply as a vital factor. If you free things up for additional, denser construction you will get lower housing costs. If all you do is raise the minimum wage without increasing housing supply, they'll just push rents up and eat all that new income.

Yes.

and the notion that people should have to work to survive.

No.

Increasing the minimum wage, to me, is only a temporary measure until the real problem - wages - is addressed.

I had never heard of CTH before, so I will definitely check out the podcast, maybe the book, too. My only pause with Jacobin, whose stream carries a lot of different programs, is that it's a pain to sift through. The positive is, they cover so many topics that I'm bound to be interested in a show at least every other day. It does not sound like it would qualify as dirtbag left, a new term to me (and one I'd embrace), but it's smart and thought-provoking.

CTH is hilarious.
The episode where they review Wonder Woman 84 is very good.

I listened to the most recent full episode, then got to the WW84 review. I'm going to continue listening, because I feel like these people are people I need to get to know a little better. They carry my values, but they also carry a more cynical worldview than I usually like to engage in to any great extent. There are zingers and other jokes that I find fairly hit-or-miss.

With the WW84 review, they have valid things to say about the film and Gal Gadot's acting in particular. Their obsession with certain continuity details are tiresome, and they repeat several of the same jokes over and over and over. They might just have higher expectations of superhero films I do (n < 0). There are some hilarious one-line takes at the beginning, however resistant I am to such a thing.

I'd still rather get educated on issues and find out how I can help rather than just taking in a left-wing hangout. Best of the Left and Jacobin are the preferred sources. My hangout shows are sports shows, mostly about local sports. But maybe I just need to give Chapo more listens and get to know their rhythm and flow throughout a good number of episodes. It's just not as funny as I expected it to be.

Have any of you listened to We Hate Movies? I'm about to give it a shot. I love the concept, for I also am finding plenty of disdain for a lot of movies. It's a funny thing, because I also love movies (which these guys also do, from what I understand), but I also understand that many provide a distorted image of reality that heavily influence the way people look at the world. I do wonder what they'd say about E.T., The Sound of Music, The Neverending Story, or even 2001, all quite ripe for being parodied. But I haven't heard the show yet, so I don't know if it's more cracking on films or giving them sincere, critical dressings-down. Of course, the features that combine earnestness with major earnings are the easiest targets. Anyhow, too much written about a show I haven't heard yet.

So Chapo Trap House survived my axing of most podcast shows that I subscribe to. For all its faults, it does make me feel like I'm in a room with likeminded people, building up arguments against not just the right, but especially the center. I do wonder if these guys have purity tests for the people they make friends with, as they seem to hate tons and tons of people, but that is their problem and not mine.

Right now, the rotation is:
Filmspotting (trying to listen to every minute of every episode, but will grant that some topics that I have no interest in - like 40's noir - get more of a cursory play...does a good job prepping me for new releases)
Locked on Suns (listen to nearly every episode)
Best of the Left (listen to at least one episode per week based on topic)
Chapo Trap House (listen to most episodes)

It comes down to the hosts ultimately, wouldn't you say? Show format, film selection, podcast concept... you can find it in any combination. But humor, insights, unique perspectives, considered responses, likeability, good group dynamic.... one or some combination of those things is what keeps you coming back.

I feel like the form of hating things as a recurring format had it's heyday in the aughts with Nostalgia Critic and Mystery Science Theater. If you have legitimately interesting reasons to hate something you can produce great, entertaining stuff but I think as a just continual weekly format it has been done in so many ways and forms that you need more in a high concept to get me interested.

And I do say this as someone that loses more and more interest in modern films every year. I don't see a point in making a platform where I talk about all the things I think suck.

Maybe this is the best place to ask, I am hating the new apple podcast app since the last IOS update. Any suggestions of something better?

The Apple Podcast app has been getting worse and worse. I am interested in hearing this also.
