I hate Black Sunday and would love to eliminate it.

Do you hate all Bava?  I was also looking at his Kill Baby, Kill and Bertolucci's Grim Reaper.  I went with Black Sunday because it offers a point of comparison with Curse of the Crying Woman ... but I'm happy to change.

Also, it looks like The Cloud-Capped Star and A Taste of Honey might be hard to find (Netflix doesn't have them, e.g.).  I'll hunt around for alternatives.  Any suggestions?

I'll throw some effort this way tonight or tomorrow.

If. . . just got a Criterion release, didn't it?

The Loneliness Of The Long-Distance Runner?  I've never seen any of these British films of the 60s.

I've no ideas for India, the Satyajit Ray movies on netflix appear to be pretty bad DVDs.

For Italy, there is Sergio Corbucci.  I've been meaning to watch Django and The Great Silence for awhile.

For Japan, Yasuzo Masumura's Red Angel is supposed to be really good.

This seems to happen more often than I'd like (I should spend more time here), but could I get a link to the discussion of the formation of this marathon?
edit - Nevermind, I found it.

Jingoku is a pretty important 60s reference point in Japan and has a beautiful Criterion.

This is the post where I believe the idea first took hold (or at least, was first discussed).

It started in the What Should I Watch thread, as an offshoot of a discussion of a current series running at the Siskel Film Center in Chicago.

I just watched the Criterion If.... last week.  Pretty good stuff.  I've seen a few other of the British films of the 60s (including Loneliness).  How about starting the marathon with The Entertainer?  It's a bridge between the old (Olivier) and the new (Richardson), plus it'll be on TCM on February 14th (4:15am EST), perfectly timed to kick off this series.

I'll look into Corbucci and see how the years line up.  (It's stupid, but I'm determined to have at least one film per year.)

The Japanese New Wave has a lot of great options and could easily be its own marathon.  My final choice was between Red Angel and Pale Flower (Jingoku was in there, too).  They all sound awesome ... no wrong choices there.  I think I went with Pale Flower because I liked the idea of its being a counterpoint, of sorts, to Seijun Suzuki's films (I watched Branded to Kill recently).

India might be have to wait until Criterion comes through for us.

This 1969 movie from Iran sounds awesome.

Japan also has Hiroshi Teshigahara from the 60s.

The Varda is great, there's also Rohmer and Chabrol from France.

Italy: Il Posto, Fists In the Pocket, Rocco And His Brothers, La Commare Secca, Salvatore Giuliano, any number of Pasolini films. . . .
