I'm starting from 2000 on:
1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind   Currently my second favorite film of all time.
2. City of God - Need I say more?  I don't think I've met anyone who wasn't blown away by this film.
3. Olboy - did people just forget this film or did they intentionally leave it off their list?
4. The Squid and the Whale - Really hit hard with me.
5. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Wes Anderson's greatest film.  Well, maybe Rushmore beats it but definitely better than Tennenbaums.

That is a brilliant frackin list Joshua.
City of God and Oldboy are both in my netflix queue atm (havent seen); so I'll just say "ditto" and throw Big Lebowski and Crouching Tiger into those positions.
mpressive...Most impressive.

1. City of God - legendary
2. The Royal Tenenbaums - Wes Anderson's masterpiece
3. Amores Perros - so visceral, so powerful, and so well-crafted
4. A Very Long Engagement - a tighter Jean-Pierre Jeunet film; may seem like heresy, but better than Amelie
5. Almost Famous - great performances, great music, great movie

update: I have since watched city of God and Oldboy, and while the later kind of lost me in the ending (why didnt he just kill him anyway?), City of God deserves to be on the list. So...
1.City of God
2.Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
3.The Incredibles
4.Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
5.The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
mpressive...Most impressive.

You're all wrong.

1. Lord of the Rings trilogy (Ok, you were right about that one)
2. Mystic River (awesome direction, even better performances)
3. Hero (absolutely beautiful)
4. Kill Bill (great movie for anyone who loves movies)
5. Traffic

I'm just going to post the first 5 that pop into my head because I'm too lazy to do a bunch of research, and I kind of like sounding like an ingnorant ass, and I'm at work and my windows of actual writing time are very small.

1. The Hours
2. Brokeback Mountain
3. Being John Malkovich  (Because it started all the other greats like Eternal Sunshine, Adaptation, and The Science of Sleep...in other words I don't care if it was 1999, it's really a THIS decade movie)
4. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
5. The Fountain
