Top 5 Movies Of The Decade so far (Top 5 idea)
« on: April 29, 2006, 08:48:46 PM »
Here's an idea for a top 5 that really doesn't have much significance, but at the same time I'm very curious to find out what other peoples' opinions are on this topic. Doing a top 5 like this will answer the question, "Has this really been a decent decade for movies?" Not the greatest, but still good in my opinion. Here are my top 5

1. Lord Of The Rings Trilogy
2. Requiem For A Dream
3. The Pianist
4. the recently released United 93
5. City Of God

Matrix sequels above Mulholland Drive?

I'd have The Son's Room in there. Was that this century?

In order of release:

Mulholland Drive
Solaris
Lost in Translation
Fahrenheit 9/11
Match Point

I haven't seen Malick's The New World yet but if I like it as much as his other work it will probably replace Fahrenheit 9/11.

Also rans (in no order):

Ghost World
Me and You and Everyone We Know
High Fidelity
About A Boy
Sex and Lucia

1. Brokeback Mountain- In my view the best film of the decade so far, sure to  be remembered for decades to come.
2. Lord of the Rings series- Awesome storytelling and epic film-making
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - One of the best romance films I've ever seen, plus it gets extra points for making Jim Carrey likeable (usually not a fan)
4. Maria Full of Grace - A little seen but extraordinary film about human drug  trafficing, Catalina Sandino Moreno is amazing in her first role.
5. Munich - Speilbergs best work since Shindlers List
6. Million Dollar Baby - Definately one of the most heartfelt films and heartbreaking ones Ive ever watched.
7. Finding Nemo - Might sound funny but I loved this movie.
8. About Schmidt - Manages to be both one of the funniest movies of the decade and also one of the saddest, and for once Jack Nicholson doesnt overact.
9. Mystic River - Kept me guessing the whole time plus it finally got Sean Penn his overdue Oscar.
10. Crash/ Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - couldnt decide between these two. Crash didnt deserve Best Picture this year but it is still a good, brave film. Crouching Tiger is Ang Lee's second best work and is basically just fun.
