I think this would be a great and long marathon:

The Taste of Others (2000) - Agnes Jaoui
Beau Travail (2000) - Claire Denis
8 Women (2002) - Francois Ozon
Read My Lips (2002) - Jacques Audiard
Time Out (2002) - Laurent Cantet
Irreversible (2003) - Gaspar Noe
A Very Long Engagement (2004) - Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Humanité (2006) - Bruno Dumont
Dans Paris (2007) - Christophe Honore
Regular Lovers (2007) - Philippe Garrel

Now it's starting to look like something. :) I would only replace the Ozon with Water Drops on Burning Rocks or Time to Leave, but that one's good too.

Actually, I would prefer Sous le Sable (Under the Sand) which is more eerie featuring a great performance from Charlotte Rampling.

So are we giving up on Australia?  ???

Judging by the poll and the comments beneath it, it sounds like we have six committed marathoners and a few others who will join in on a film or two, time-permitting.  I think that's enough interest to justify sticking with Australian Films.  Do you agree, and, if so, when do you want to start?

Also, there was some concern about the speed of these things, so I don't know if you'd want to try bi-weekly screenings, or stick with weekly.  I'm for whatever generates the most active discussion threads.

I'm in for Aussie films.  I suggest you all see Lantana (outside the marathon) and I'm dreading Ten Canoes, but at least I don't have to watch The Castle again!  When do we start?  (I've been slack on the boards lately.  Has this been decided?)

What if we start the Friday after next — April 11th?  The Beginners will be in-between marathons, and the World Cinema series will be in an off-week.  Maybe that'll free people up to give the first Australian film a look.
