Sometimes you get The Purple Rose of Cairo, sometimes you get Mighty Aphrodite.  We should just be glad we didn't get Hollywood Endings.

I guess I much prefer the Purple Rose experience then, so joyfully celebrating the fantasy and yet bringing us back to earth, too.

Haven't had the (dubious?) pleasure of Hollywood Endings. :)  He was just talking about that one, though, on The Film Programme - said he thought it was his funniest movie.

Yeah, I haven't seen it either.  But artists are usually terrible judges of their own work.

I guess Tea Leoni, Debra Messing, and Kelly Kapowski's inability to resist him is kinda funny.  :)

The blindness bit could be good in a better movie.

I\
Midnight in Paris Woody Allen, 2011

Don't romanticize the past, says Woody. Okay, well, but you gotta give me something besides rich douchebags, and, no, pretty French maidens straight out of my fantasies won't do. Unless it's all really happening to me, in which case, I'll take it.
Yep, that's it, exactly.  "Don't romanticize the past, but just go ahead and accept the fantasy of this film instead; we'll just decide that life will placate us beautiful French girls and the pretty postcard Paris even if we give up our dreams of the past."

I fail to see this as a criticism. It seems to be more of a nitpick to me.

Yeah, it isn't The Purple Rose of Cairo. But Midnight in Paris is a straight up comedy, while Purple Rose is clearly a surrealistic drama. It's an unfair comparison.

In case you missed it, Part 1 of Woody Allen: A Documentary is available to watch online here.  I enjoyed it, and I don't think you need to be a fan of WA to enjoy it as well.

Part 2 was pretty average.  Near-skippable.  More talking heads with the performers of his films rather than WA.

Part 2 was pretty average.

Yeah. There was a little about process, but mostly, it just felt like a retrospective. Too bad, as the film started out more as a comprehensive portrait of the man.
