Stardust Memories
* * 1/2

There is a connection between Woody Allen's rising career and relationships with women and Fellini's. However, their filmmaking styles are so different, and often Allen can only imitate Fellini's flourishes. There are some great times, when the Fellini is perfectly filtered through Allen's neurosis (like the meeting with aliens), but not enough to make the film work. Also, I don't think Fellini was ever so hard on his fans. They might show up at the wrong times, but he respected their strangeness as part of the circus. Allen portrays them as omnipresent, annoying parasites to be despised.

Blue Jasmine
* * *

My #12 Woody Allen out of 32 plays like a rough cut of something truly great. The fragmented storytelling threw me at first, but it's anchored by Cate Blanchett performance, every bit as good as I heard. These snapshots of Jasmine's life are a series of dramatic highlights for actors to play with none of the transitional scenes. A lot of them work, and the great acting extends well beyond Blanchett. Then there are a handful of scenes that would've/should've hit the floor on a more concentrated pass. Poor Michael Stuhlbarg has to play a dramatic arc older than time. I love hearing about Baldwin's arrest. There was no need to show it. Stuff like that. It's become the common complaint that with a little more time and effort, Allen's films can only benefit. This one needed it most because it's disappointingly close to being top shelf.

I need to search for a spoiler thread, I reckon. I also should watch more Allen, maybe? Blue Jazzzzzzzz is the type of film I didn't realize Woodrow had in him, would say it even gives the old Ms. Hall a good run for her money, but part of that is because it doesn't feel like a Woody Allen film as I understand them. Who knows.
