I should see more.
You've seen four and none of them have Allen acting. That's just wrong.

None of them have Keaton or Farrow either. I don't understand.

The Purple Rose of Cairo
* * * - Very Good

Though I hadn't watched this in a long while and I always hated the ending, this was my favorite Woody Allen film for the particular way it loves people who love to escape to the movies. The jokes involving the characters trapped in the film and the dual performance by Jeff Daniels, representing both sides of our fascination with actors closely associated with their characters are still marvelous. However, Danny Aiello's abusive husband is such a royal a-hole, that he unbalances the tone. (He should just be a dumb jerk, easy to shake off, and less of a brutish threat.) I also still hate the ending, though all these years later I understand the truth of it better, and the final close-up on Mia Farrow's face almost saves it.

What's wrong with the ending other than being too perfect for words?

I like Mia Farrow's character so much that I would have wished for her to live in a happy fantasy that lasts forever and doesn't end when her movie does. Real love > Movie love, but the ending tries to argue the opposite.

I don't think so? Because even though she fell in love with the character, it would've likely never lasted - he was still a rather one-dimensional character, filled with devotion, sure, but that's about it. But even then, I think it just suggests that, at this period of time, everyone needed an escape. This was hers - but the escape can only last so long. It couldn't end in any other way.

Watched a few more since last time. Had to use Letterboxd to help me sort them out (they should really let you change your ratings on the list editing page).

Manhattan
Annie Hall

Match Point
Midnight in Paris
Magic in the Moonlight
Whatever Works
Blue Jasmine

Hannah and her Sisters
Crimes and Misdemeanours
The Purple Rose of Cairo
Manhattan Murder Mystery
A Midsummer's Night Sex Comedy
Hollywood Ending
Bananas
The Curse of the Jade Scorpion

Melinda and Melinda
Café Society
Irrational Man
Celebrity
Alice

Scoop
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
To Rome With Love

Allen is probably the director I know best by number of movies watched. Unfortunately there is a bunch of them I can barely remember.

Do you like her because she feels real and is well written or because you like the person? I ask because I cannot stand her. (just watched it two weeks ago)

I like the character and wish for her to get a better life instead of constantly being under the soul-crushing thumb of men.

I like the character and wish for her to get a better life instead of constantly being under the soul-crushing thumb of men.

But that would be untrue to the character. Being subservient to men is half her personality. The other half is a mix of reverie, escapism, self-delusions and star struckness. She is an addict yearning for the next fix to escape from the awful men she chooses for herself.
