Grumpy Martin is best Martin.

I don't think people objected to the aliens because they were so outlandish, rather, the plot was so egregiously terrible its conclusion was utterly undeserved and failed spectacularly.

Alien Resurrection isn't that bad. The whole lengthy underwater/elevator sequence is quite good and Ripley burning the clones is a surprisingly effective moment.

The Post  (Steven Spielberg, 2017)

I might be more generous to this film on a second viewing. It's not a bad movie, but it's so frustratingly lowest-common-denominator, like sequels tend to be. And this is totally a sequel — to Quiz Show, a film written by a Washington Post critic-turned-screenwriter and directed by a guy who famously played Post reporter Bob Woodward. The script for Spielberg's film could have used a rewrite by Attanasio. The effort by Liz Hannah and Josh Singer is rather superficial and lacking in wit. I wasn't a a huge fan of Streep's performance here, but the ensemble cast makes for a fun game of Name That 'That Guy.' The editing is really sloppy at times — contrary to Spielberg's reputation — but production design is strong. In a death match between this and Darkest Hour, I'd pick the latter — much to my surprise.

Grade: C+

Funny, I think of it as a prequel to All the President's Men.

I think you all know what I voted for.

I'm chiming in on this thread because I want to know: What is Steven Spielberg to cinema and culture?

Most of my Spielberg viewing came in the 90's and early 00's, where I never saw much beyond the wide releases. Thus, I haven't deeply considered him, and think any conclusions I could come up with right now would not be all that insightful, so that's where I turn to all of you.

For the record, here is a ranked list of the films I've seen from Spielberg...don't get on me for what I haven't seen, they just haven't interested me...until maybe now, at least for Indiana Jones and Jaws...(probably like WotW more than most, not a lot of love for Lincoln...)
E.T.
Schindler's List
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Minority Report

Jurassic Park
War of the Worlds
Munich

Ready Player One
Saving Private Ryan
The Adventures of Tin Tin
Lincoln
Hook

Hey. I’m new here. I thought I’d make my first post on the Spielberg thread. My first memorable experience with film was a Spielberg movie, so I’ve always had a huge soft spot for his work. I’ve never sat down and ranked his films from best to worst. I’m kinda curious what it’ll look like...

Blues are my favorites
Greens are Spielberg flicks I really enjoy
Oranges are Spielberg flicks I am indifferent towards and never have the urge to rewatch
Reds are what I consider his worst

Schindler’s List
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Jaws
Saving Private Ryan
Jurassic Park
Minority Report
E.T.
Munich
Raiders of the Lost Ark
A.I.

Empire of the Sun
Catch Me If You Can
The Color Purple
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
War of the Worlds
Amistad
Lincoln
The Sugarland Express
The Adventures of Tintin

War Horse
The Terminal
Bridge of Spies
The Post
The BFG
Ready Player One
1941

Hook
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Always
The Lost World

Nothing too surprising here, really. It was fun anyway... 🙂
