Jurassic Park (Steven Spielberg, 1993)

I liked this more than I expected to. It's often silly and Jeff Goldblum is both useless and annoying (thankfully more or less disappears halfway through the film), but I didn't mind the kids and Laura Dern as much as others seem too... I'd say they were pretty competent and level-headed considering the circumstances. Yeah there's a bit of screaming and running in the jungle, but... they're being chased by T-Rexes and velociraptors, that makes sense to me.

Spielberg was very smart in making the raptors the final threat, because the T-Rex, while cool and impressive, would quickly be made ridiculous by the whole "he only sees movement" thing, at least as it works within this reality. Raptors, on the other hand... it really shouldn't work, but that "he'd have to learn how to open a door" moment encapsulates what makes them much more effective as threats in the long run.

Sam Neill is key to the film working, and I was relieved to see Spielberg being almost restrained with his arc. Almost, because it starts off typically heavy-handed, but once the T-Rex shows up, he lets things play out relatively matter-of-factly there, trusting his actor, and Neill delivers with a quiet, strong performance.

I like that he doesn't give up on the wonderment of the first part entirely once things go sour : it underlines that being awed isn't necessarily naive, you can still feel that way when you know the danger and general foolishness of the whole endeavor. John Williams' score works really well in that regard, especially in that last T-Rex moment.

7/10

I haven't seen Crystal Skull, but it'd have to be pretty bad to be worse than Temple of Doom, so I probably agree. But I'm not the biggest fan of Indiana Jones to begin with, so.
