Azumi (2003)
« on: March 28, 2008, 02:10:43 AM »
When it comes to Japanese action adventures this is right up there. It has that over the top Battle Royale style with blood unrealistically gashing out of bodies, and does it to great effect. The film is very stylish and slick, and yet also dives into a fairly deep emotional side.

The opening is fantastic, with a thought provoking dilemma that good me hooked straight away. The action throughout is lush entertainment, and the final battle scene is one of my favourites of any action film. People who dislike anything to do with martial arts may find the action to become tedious, but if you're a fan I am pretty sure you'll really enjoy this movie.
But from what I hear, avoid the sequel!

It's very sloppy.

It poorly paced and at times overly stylish, but the extended climax really hits the spot.  I like director Ryuhei Kitamura a lot, but recommend starting with VERSUS, GODZILLA: FINAL WARS or SKY HIGH (not the Disney film about super kids)

I watched Versus. It was a while ago; didn't realize it was the same guy. Yeah, it was much better. Azumi didn't really do it for me.
