Magic Mike was great and totally fun. Gorgeous to look at especially during the beach scenes and the two big party scenes. Also really loved the scene at the bank and the way Tatum switches between half a dozen different ways to persuade the banker to grant him his loan. Tatum's totally adorable throughout. And I think I smiled happily through every single dance number at the club. And the editing.. mmmm.

Soderbergh just doesn't seem all that excited to make an action movie, and in the end he's even tired of watching Gina Carano fight.

While I liked the film more than you, this was my biggest problem with it.

See I don't see it that way - he's playing up the inherent boredom of the genre fight, travel, fight, travel... thats why the film ends on the ellipsis that it does, this cycle won't change, and it IS boring - Matt Damon did the same thing for three movies! Soderbergh is commenting on the tedious nature of this exercise.

Of all possible explanations, that is the lamest.

Yeah, Matt Damon did the same thing for three movies that were all better than Haywire.

I just added seven films to the poll above. That seems like a lot, no?

It could have been eight, but I couldn't convince myself that The Last Time I Saw Michael Gregg was a real film.

I think I'd love how awkward it'd be, or how awkward it should be.

I see why.

Magic Mike  (Steven Soderbergh, 2012)
Foreigner's "Feels Like the First Time" plays over the end credits of Magic Mike. I like to think that this is Soderbergh's winking nod to the audience and the derivativeness and banality of his film's script (which, to be fair, isn't totally awful, just very, very meh). In fact, the first thing I did upon getting home from the movie was to go to IMDb to check the soundtrack listing for 1988's Cocktail, because I could totally picture the same song playing over the end credits of that film. (Okay, not quite.) There's one particular shot of Alex Pettyfer sitting on a bench at the beach where he even looks a little like young Tom Cruise (though he struggles with the delivery of his lines more in that scene that I imagine Tommy would have). So, that's my thesis: that Soderbergh pretty much made a more visually controlled version of Cocktail. I was okay with it through about the halfway point, but then I just got more and more bored and things got less and less fresh. It compares unfavorably to Cassavetes The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, too, but that's another story.
Grade: C

I know the focus is on his recent films, but I really wished I could have voted for Kafka.  It gets no love and it was a really fun, well-made film.

bb: lol at all the women who went to this thinking it was some party flick
