Out of Sight.

The period from 1998–2001 is solid gold. Everything else I've seen from him, not so much.

Sex, Lies, and Videotape is easily the best, Out of Sight and The Limey are also good, Traffic was okay... the rest not so much.

Couldn't disagree more. Like the poll and spoko and verbALs indicate, the top of his game was 1998-2001.

his vision is so incredibly sharp at this point, before he was still finding himself, there was no consitency - christ, see the year 2000. He's now had 4 straight years (and Sodie years are like twice as dense as most peoples) without a miss.

caveat - not seen: And Everything Is Going Fine & The Last Time I Saw Michael Gregg.

also, the poll options need some serious updating!

As the latest Filmspotting SVU pointed out, and to agree with Keith's comment Haywire is an extremely efficient action movie. For Soderbergh, it's as much of a departure, as the more satiric Informant! and the "disaster" movie Contagion. I think they all share a consistent vision, but they all might get passed over somewhat, as I say, for being efficient film-making. Haywire, of these, is a stand-out, and I feel I've dismissed it a little, in the same way a lot of people did; even though I loved it at the time; rewatch soon I hope.

I didn't think Haywire was efficient so much as it was boring. He seems to have no idea how to pace an action movie, much less an action sequence. And the characters & dialogue were thoroughly bland, so there was nothing much to save it. It wasn't a terrible movie, but it was barely good. Utterly forgettable, had it not been one of his.

I think you're all arguing about the wrong thing. His latest work has been very spotty and average. His 98-01 work was probably his most commercially successful, but since when do the masses know what is good? His first feature film was the clearly the winner here. Everything since pales pails in comparison.

You're the only one even talking about the commercial success, so I'm not sure how you can accuse anyone else of arguing about that. I'm not aware that The Limey or even Out of Sight were all that successful, and artistically they are leagues above the pile of pretentious crap that is Sex Lies and Videotape. Personally I don't much care how commercially successful it is. Like you, I don't assume it's the best just because it makes the most money. Unlike you, I don't assume it's the worst based on the same evidence.

Wow is that a snobby statement. Where do you stand that allows you to speak of "the masses" rather than the exceptionally high quality of the work and those of us who recognize and appreciate it?
