Was it the studio edited version or the long version?

The edited one, of course.  If you're holding out for the uncut version, don't.  It's probably never going to surface.

The stand-alone DVD was released this past Tuesday.  Add it to your Netflix queues so that they stock it.  The one in September came along with the CK Blu-ray as an Amazon Exclusive.  Anyway, watch the film as soon as you can.

I watched it again when the Blu-Ray came.  It's really good until it isn't.  Really really good.

The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)

I'm not much of one for story, but man is the story in this film fantastic. The array of characters put against the industrial revolution background teases out some of the same themes of Citizen Kane, but in a world with a bit more consequence behind it for the characters. Yes, it's not quite the visual feast as Citizen Kane and yes, you can feel the gaps where the studio edit absolutely butchered the pacing and character development for this film, but it's still enthralling and I can see how it could have been (and still might be for some) a better film than Citizen Kane.

My opinion that he is overrated has been well-documented.

1. Citizen Kane
2. The Magnificent Ambersons
3. The Immortal Story
4. Othello

5. The Stranger
6. Too Much Johnson
7. Chimes at Midnight
8. Touch of Evil
9. F For Fake

10. The Trial
11. The Lady From Shanghai
12. Mr. Arkadian
