I certainly do not hate it either.  And I do like every scene (except maybe when Bell talks to his Uncle) and I like every character.  It just doesn't quite work as a whole for me for some reason, I can't really put my finger on it.  And I love the Coens.

Interesting. I think it is a rare film where every moment is perfect. I can't think of a scene that isn't just wonderfully crafted and tense.

This.

NCFOM is really good. It's just that There Will Be Blood is better. If one came out a year after the other there would be no reason to talk about them in the same context. Unfortunately they came out in a three month span or something and the world was just not ready for that much awesomeness. And since TWBB is better but less seen (because of the Oscars, probably) I feel like I must defend it more than champion NCFOM. Does that make any sense?

You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

Juno should have won in 2007. And if not that, Atonement. Or they should have nominated films like Perfume or Into The Wild that are far better than TWBB.

I do love that NCFOM and TWBB are inextricably tied together in the minds of the filmboardarati.  More for proximity than anything else - though they are both deeply cynical films willed with bad people doing bad things and the disinclined good.

also, Bondo - good use of the Unpopular Opinion thread! ;)

For me they aren't tied together in any way, one is a fantastic film with nary a flaw in sight while other other is a good, but deeply flawed film. The two great films from 2007 that I link in my head are NCFOM and Eastern Promises.

as I said your thoughts on the quality have little bearing on the association.  It was a year in which battle lines were clear and people were forced to choose sides.  Two titans of the indiestablishment, with their cache of cool amongst the modern cineaste played out glouriously for the prize... a prize the same cineaste usually look down their noses on but here revealed the all powerful supremacy of OSCAR to define annual film culture.  2007 was brilliant.  Validate me!
