It's a sub-genre, or at least as much of one as 'Zombie Film'.

I don't think it's a sub-genre. A sub-genre of what? Horror? Sci-Fi? Action? Is there a separate sub-genre for each genre? Meaning: video game adaptation action sub genre and a video game adaptation horror sub-genre or how about video game adaptation zombie horror sub-sub-genre (Resident Evil)? I think that's taking it a bit far. I would stay away from calling video game adaptations their own sub-genre (again, sub of what?), after all there is no based on a bestseller (sub)genre either. Where the material originated before being turned into a movie is not all that important, is it?

I can't think of a single genre which doesn't contain a movie that I think is good. Which is a complicated way of saying that I think all genres can be viable for movie goodness.
I would agree, but then there's the genre of...

Video Game Adaptation

Tomb Raider, Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, Doom, Street Fighter.

A genre is a loose set of criteria for a category of composition. Genres are vague categories with no fixed boundaries, they are formed by sets of conventions, and many works cross into multiple genres by way of borrowing and recombining these conventions.

I could argue that it's a sub-genre of Fantasy and Sci-fi.  (Even more straight forward action pieces like Max Payne and Tomb Raider have fantastique elements in them.)

But truthfully, it has its own criteria of composition and is a genre much the same way that TV Adaptation is.

Video game adaptations are not a genre. It's just a blanket way of referring to films adapted from video games, and it happens that most of them are pretty terrible.

eg. The recent spat of superhero movies are in the superhero movie sub-genre. They are not in the comic book adaptation genre because no such genre exists, and not all of them are comic book adaptations anyway.

Regardless of its status as a genre, there are still some good movies based on video games, there's Fatal Fury and some other anime, the first Mortal Kombat and of course most of Uwe Boll's filmography, and yes, I am completely serious when listing him as good.
