The story of Avatar is more entertaining than the 3D presentation thereof.

I dont think anyone, but maybe FLY, was all that impressed by the 3D part. It is the VFX that are amazing in the movie. The 3D adds a tiny amount to the movie, but I think it would be equally visually amazing in 2D (although to be fair the two times I saw it were in 3D so I dont know for sure).

For me the movies enjoyment breaks down like this:

90% VFX
5% 3D
5% story

I was really impressed by the 3D opening with all the guys floating around in the ship. There were some other scattered moments, mostly little things like those floating puff things, that I enjoyed but overall it didn't add much to the experience (of course you don't have a choice if you want to see it on the IMAX).

I really didn't see the big deal with the 3D.

You're not meant to think about it. Just let it sink in and allow it to become immersive. It makes the experience feel slightly less passive if you enjoy that sort of thing.

Ask again when people have actually seen it in 2D.

It's a movie, not hypnosis.

Truer words were never spoken about Avatar.

I've had Treasure of the Sierra Madre at home from Netflix for two months now, and I can't bring myself to watch it.  The whole premise sounds so...  uninteresting.
