every single day
i am 22 and you are 25

I met a guy, and he had an awful lot
And everything he had, he wanted more of
Just liked to roll around; telling all god's children
It isn't who you are, but it's what you've got

And there was weakness, and no compassion
And hell below, and Heavens Above
Heavens Above, Heavens Above
Heavens Above

I met a guy, and he didn't have a lot
The little he did have, he didn't want more of
Just liked to roll around; telling all you people
It isn't what you don't have, but it's what you've got

And there was strength, and compassion
And beautiful love, and Heavens Above
Heavens Above, Heavens Above
Heavens Above
Heavens Above, Heavens Above
Show me love, Heavens Above.

I met a girl, and she had a lot
And everything she had, she gave it to me
And I met myself; going backwards
And it's not what you don't have, but it's what you've got

And there was strength, and compassion
And beautiful love, and Heavens Above
Heavens Above, Heavens Above
Heavens Above.......

And for my weakness, I'll be a better man
And for my weakness, I'll be a better man
And for my success, I'll be a better man
And for my god, I'll be a better man

Heavens Above, Yak

The squats we used to party in
Our flats we can't afford
The dumps we did our dancing in
Have all been restored
Pints all up to quit
The staff are beautiful and bored
You think it's coming up 'round here
It's falling on its sword

It don't feel like home no more
I don't speak the lingo
Since when was this a winery
It used to be the bingo
I've walked these streets for all my life
They know me like no other
But the streets have changed
I no longer feel them shudder

Alright, alright, I get the gist
Who's city is this? It doesn't want me no more
In fact, I glimpse into the future, it stinks
London's walled fort, it's all for the rich
If you fall short, you fall, and you know where the door is
Board up the broken, do it up, sell it back
Make it bespoke, it's all out in the open
It's fine, man, hike the price right up
And smile with your friends in the posh new nightclubs
My streets have been dug up, repaved
New routes for commuters, the landscape has changed
I'm lookin' for the old tags, the graffs that once meant safe territory
But it seems every habitat gets whitewashed eventually

And so I'm moving on
I've got it all to play for
I'll be the invader in some other neighbourhood
I'll be sipping perfect coffee
Thinkin', "This is pretty good,"
While the locals grit their teeth and hum
"Another CINECAST!ing one has come."

All I see is luxury tenements, woebegone residents
Redolent resin-heads puffing on pleasure
Everyone's reckoning something is beckoning
There's never been anything, there's only forever
Towering tower blocks, scaffolding rattling
The tube is prattering ram full of passengers
Smashing its way into town, we are scavengers
Scrapping around in the sludge for our sustenance
Have a dash party life, rubbing our shoulders
Into the mould, yes, we do what we're told
We're Sisyphus pushing his boulder
The kids are alright, but the kids will get older

Perfect Coffee- Kate Tempest

What's surprising is the lack of artistic response to seismic social movements. Perhaps nobody feels the need to think past the length of a witty chatty bon mot, so coalescing those thoughts into a coherent idea is antithetical when the world talks in twitter. Tempest is somewhat breaking the mo(u)ld about the city I love becoming a theme park. Who wants to live in a place that shudders?

And when or if the sun shines
Lighting our once beautiful feature
We'll smile, but only for seconds
For to be caught smiling's to acknowledge life
A brave but useless show of compassion
And that is forbidden in this drab and colourless world.
"What should have been an enjoyable 90 minutes of nubile, high-school flesh meeting a frenzy of blood-caked blades, becomes instead an exploitational and complex parable of the conflicting demands of agrarianism and artistry. I voted a miss."

Just read part of a poem Kipling wrote advocating the annexation of the Philippines by the US back in 1899 and it is sort of surreal. Do they teach that in American high schools ?

The White Man's Burden: The United States and The Philippine Islands (1899)

Take up the White Man's burden, Send forth the best ye breed
  Go bind your sons to exile, to serve your captives' need;
To wait in heavy harness, On fluttered folk and wild—
  Your new-caught, sullen peoples, Half-devil and half-child.

Take up the White Man's burden, In patience to abide,
  To veil the threat of terror And check the show of pride;
By open speech and simple, An hundred times made plain
To seek another's profit, And work another's gain.

Take up the White Man's burden, The savage wars of peace—
  Fill full the mouth of Famine And bid the sickness cease;
And when your goal is nearest The end for others sought,
Watch sloth and heathen Folly Bring all your hopes to nought.

Take up the White Man's burden, No tawdry rule of kings,
But toil of serf and sweeper, The tale of common things.
The ports ye shall not enter, The roads ye shall not tread,
Go make them with your living, And mark them with your dead.

Take up the White Man's burden And reap his old reward:
The blame of those ye better, The hate of those ye guard—
The cry of hosts ye humour (Ah, slowly!) toward the light:—
"Why brought he us from bondage, Our loved Egyptian night?"

Take up the White Man's burden, Ye dare not stoop to less—
  Nor call too loud on Freedom To cloak your weariness;
By all ye cry or whisper, By all ye leave or do,
The silent, sullen peoples Shall weigh your gods and you.

Take up the White Man's burden, Have done with childish days—
The lightly proffered laurel, The easy, ungrudged praise.
Comes now, to search your manhood, through all the thankless years
Cold, edged with dear-bought wisdom, The judgment of your peers!

So where will we go when the waters threaten to wash us away?
And all of our sons and our daughters wilt in the heat of the day?
I feel the sun draw nearer, I feel the sea start to rise
Who's looking back in the mirror? Why are they closing -
Why are they closing their eyes?
