Kermode on Filmspotting

It's a good possibility... but what do we have him on for?

Well, once in awhile I've heard you use the phrase "chick flick" in all it's deplorable glory. Just do that again, his reaction to you will be worth the effort.

Really, just inciting his anger in any way is consistently entertaining. Just try not to have him on for something that already came out in the UK because he doesn't revamp his reviews for different appearances.

Actually, I'm pretty sure we've never used the phrase chick flick without quotation marks.

We simply don't review movies like 27 Dresses so there's no need for it to come up.

He goes nuts over every use of it. I'm not honestly sure you can put enough quotes around it.

Regardless, what are the parameters of him coming on?

I don't know... seems like there are a lot bigger concerns in the criticism/film game than use of the label chick flick. Regardless, I'm not aware of any parameters. I'm just looking for suggestions on what would make sense to have him on to discuss.

When Cameron Diaz suddenly decides to go to Miami half an hour into the foot-dragging 'chick flick' In Her Shoes, we sincerely hope to have seen the back of her.

Guess I'll have to find one of his rants somewhere.

Sadly, there are a lot of bigger concerns. The discussions I've had with some of my colleagues have been disturbing in both good and bad ways.

I mean, I suppose you could use him in the traditional horror or brit-centric ways, but otherwise I'd say he's as general as the next guy. Maybe if you have something coming up with a lot of good feelings building up around it that neither you nor Matty have high hopes for you could bring him in with hopes of a counter-point? Maybe you could just try to bring him in for the half-year lists.

I thought about having him on for the best of the year so far... my only concern is any divide between what has opened here or there, and timing... does anyone know how releases work in the UK compared to US.

Son of Rambow would also make sense.

As would maybe Indiana Jones, just as a tent-pole movie.

Hellboy 2 would be an idea, he loves some Del Toro.  But it doesn't come out in the UK til mid August so I don't know if he'd get a chance to see it.

Son Of Rambow seems the obvious tie in though.

Could always just talk about The Exorcist.

I do love The Exorcist, but as you guys know, horror isn't our strong suit.

I love this idea!!

It would be really interesting, I think, to have him talk about brit-centric or specifically British films and/or the horror which he so loves. His interest in horror is fascinating to me, partly because I can't handle it.

Or, you could always spar with him about Tarantino and Michael Moore - both of whom you guys like and he loathes.  ;)  Oh, and you differ with him regarding Judd Apatow, too.
