Top 5 Movie Years
« on: May 22, 2008, 07:42:30 AM »
OK, so WallE suggested this a while back, and it never actually materialised. I think it's an immense suggestion for a 'Top 5 list' and would be interesting to see what peoples favourite years are/were.

Somebody else (?) queried: "Will '77 be in the penalty box?" I don't think it should be and don't think there should be a penalty box at all!

I have nearly finished my list and will post it shortly...

This was actually way harder than I had initially anticipated!

I would like to say my list is pretty predictable, not too 'out there' and is predominantly 'modern'. Some of my information may be wrong, and there are obviously some phenomonal films from from every year I have chosen which are missed off, so, I apologise in advance.

I am not stating that I beleive these are the best movies ever produced, nor am I not saying any of the movies mentioned are flawless!

These are merely my favourite years in movies, for whatever reason!

I also had trouble ordering my years, so I've been uber-dull and listed them chronologically to avoid conflict.

Here goes...

1969 - I won't lie, I'm not a massive fan of many films pre-1960 and this is as early as I'm going for my choices. 1967 saw censorship laws ease up quite a bit with films such as Bonnie and Clyde, and by '69, counter-culture was more evident in cinema than ever and the Best Picture Oscar went to Midnight Cowboy which was a fairly-controversial fillm at the time.

Honourable mentions include: Easy Rider, The Wild Bunch and Butch cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

1974 - Produced arguably the best of The Godfather movies: The Godfather Part II, and for Coppola to have that and The Conversation (a pretty decent film) both up for Best Picture was a remarkable achievment, by a man who was once untouchable.

Honourable mention: Chinatown (Nicholson was actually great, once upon a time).

1984 - I am including this year strictly because two of modern cinemas greatest directors made their first features: Joel Coen and Jim Jarmusch (Blood Simple and Stranger Than Paradise) and this was a very important year for independent cinema as a whole. The Oscars were pretty weak, but Amadeus rightfully took the Best Picture award. This could also be my nostalgia year (but I was only 4!) as I saw a lot of films from this year in the early 90's.

Honourable mentions: The Terminator, This is Spinal Tap and Ghostbusters.

1997 - The Academy finally gave some indy/smaller/'good' films a bit of well-deserved respect (Good Will Hunting, As Good as it Gets, L.A Confidential), but screwed it up by awarding Titanic Dicks!

Honourable mentions: Boogie Nights and In the Company of Men - two of the greatest films of the 1990's. Honestly.

1999 - Simplly here because a lot of ideas and actors had been exhausted by this point in time and finally, some (kind of) fresh ideas and concept in film appeared. I mention: Magnolia, The Matrix, Fight Club, American Beauty et al, films that I would even go as far to call 'important', although not necessarily amazing.

I am also quickly going to big-up 2007! Clearly the best year of the 2000's, in regard to Oscar recognition anyway! One of the best Coens movie in a while (No Country For Old Men), and the epic (in every sense!) There Will be Blood, as well as Juno and countless other decent, but flawed movies I don't have time to mention!

Apologies if I have made any mistakes above! Please share yours.

So, is this only American movie years or did you just have no foreign films that you felt warranted bringing up?
You're just jealous! Nobody loves you because you're tiny and made of meat!

Sometimes it's difficult to get the year right with those though.

Anyway...

1939 - The Wizard Of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, Drums Along The Mohawk, Stagecoach, Gone With The Wind, The Rules Of The Game, Dark Victory, Ninotchka, Only Angels Have Wings, Beau Geste

1971 - The French Connection, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, Duel, Dirty Harry, Klute, A Clockwork Orange, A New Leaf, The Go-Between, The Last Picture Show, Harold & Maude

1984 - Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, Gremlins, The Terminator, This Is Spinal Tap, Comfort And Joy, Romancing The Stone, Blood Simple, All Of Me, Sixteen Candles

1993 - True Romance, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Groundhog Day, In The Line Of Fire, A Perfect World, Searching For Bobby Fischer, The Piano, The Fugitive, Menace II Society

1995 - Braveheart, The Usual Suspects, Babe, Toy Story, Heat, 12 Monkeys, Se7en, Living In Oblivion, Rob Roy, Casino

Of course, the best way to judge a year is by how great the supposedly terrible movies are:

1971 - Billy Jack, The Andromeda Strain, Bedknobs & Broomsticks, Two Lane Blacktop, Sweet Sweetback's Badasssss Song

1984 - Bachelor Party, Cloak & Dagger, Irreconcilable Differences, Red Dawn, Starman

1993 - Airborne, Army Of Darkness, Hard Target, Son In Law, Striking Distance

1995 - Bad Boys, Friday, Waterworld, Billy Madison, Clueless

Doesn't really work for 1939.  Or if it does, it's been lost to history.  But that year can stand on its own merits anyway.

Come on people, what about 2007?! We had Transformers and Rush Hour 3 in the same summer! Don't forget Shrek 3!

Oh, and something about old men not allowed inside some country somewhere...
-Le Chiffre: You changed your shirt, Mr Bond. I hope our little game isn't causing you to perspire.

-James Bond: A little. But I won't consider myself to be in trouble until I start weeping blood.

I absolutely love this idea for a Top 5 and am glad someone suggested it. I gotta crunch some numbers and figure out my list...

1954 - Seven Samurai, Rear Window, Sansho the Baliff, and Dial M for Murder.  Seems like a pretty solid lineup.

1957 - Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Throne of Blood, The Cranes are Flying, Paths of Glory.

It's been done.
;)

Thats where I got my choices from, its a really good idea actually.  If somebody more organized than me could arrange soemthing like that here, it would be awesome.  I like the idea of doing it by decade, too much info to work with otherwise.
