I disdain the practice. A year and x number of months works just as fine.

Boo!  Syllabic inefficiency!

For what it's worth OAD, when you are talking to me you can use months.

I am 527 months.

Trust me - there is still some development that needs to be going on. ;D

Babies, specifically calling babies 16 months or something. After 12 months they are a year old. I don't call myself 245 months old, no I call myself 20 years old. Grow up, people!
Major developmental steps are made each month between 12 and 24 months. A 13 month-old, for example, is a completely different person than an 18 month-old. That's why it's useful to describe a child's age by months from 0-24 months. At 2 years old, changes aren't so drastic month-by-month.

if you want to reify normative ideas of "development"  ;D
Oh, lord.

but true, right? :)
But not very practical down in the trenches. :)

Calling it "3D" when not specifically talking about Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience.

Likewise, arbitrary hyphens.

Likewise, arbitrary hyphens.
I've taken to hyphenating everything because of AP Style. According to AP Style, when in doubt, hyphenate. Or I look it up on dictionary.com.

For instance, I don't know if it's shitstorm or shit-storm.

95% of the people with mikes that play Modern Warfare 2. It's not often someone actually says something that's related to the task at hand. Mostly people just exchange insults.

When I played Team Fortress 2 on the PC it seemed most everyone used it for game related talk.
