FLCL

I watched this a while ago but never got around to writing about it because it's so hard for me to describe exactly what I like so much about it. The first time I started it, I watched the first episode and while I liked the animation and the music and even the central characters, I wasn't at all sure where it was going and never got around to continuing it. Then I picked it up again another weekend when I wasn't doing anything else and this time, I ended up watching it all over 2 days from start to finish. And this time around I completely fell in love with it. I can't really summarize the plot beyond saying that it's sort of a coming-of-age story about a boy who lives in a town where seemingly nothing ever happens. Except there's a strange steam-iron shaped robot factory in that town. There's a lot of crazy insane stuff that happens in the series (all of which are amazing to watch and always accompanied by this fantastic soundtrack) but there're also some really sweet normal moments in between. I found it all rather confusing but all the madness is so charming that this didn't deter me from watching the whole thing at all. Things sort of start to make more sense towards the end but it's always so colorful, so interesting and unpredictable and the characters are so much fun to be around that the story is really secondary in some sense. It just has an energy that I miss now that i've finished watching the whole thing.

I just caught up with this thread and I think I might watch either Beck, Cowboy Bebop or Escaflowne next.

Btw, the scene from which I got the screenshots for this thread is just such a cool scene that I now feel like going back and watching it again... Pity, you can't hear the music that goes with it too.

I'm completely with you on all counts. It's pure awesome but hard to describe why, but you're dead on about the music and energy of it. Nothing else I've seen even comes close to the truly unique experience of FLCL.

I couldnt honestly tell you my favourite anime, but here are some series i have seen, and what i thought of them

Death Note - ****

The first season was brilliant, the second, not so much, though it was still entertaining.

Hellsing - ***1/2

Vampires, ah vampires. Alot more action in this one. unfortunately i felt the story didnt really develop properly throughout, only suddenly deveolped at the end of the series.

FLCL - ****1/2

a short series, but if you are at all into classic/indy rock then you will like the soundtrack to thus and alot of the jokes. Its a pretty chaotic, but the chaos is what makes it awesome

Tenjho Tenge ****

A fairly decent fighting series, with just enough fanservice to keep people interested, unfortunately again the series seemed to end prematurely

Ikki Tousen ***1/2

As action packed as Tenjho Tenge, but with alot more fanservice, and a story that is pretty intriguing for the most part, unfortunately the main character is almost completely useless, until randomly gets possessed by an ancient spirit etc etc

Project A-ko ***1/2

slightly older series, actually a series of 4 movies about a school girl called A-ko who has superhuman strength and her arch rival B-ko who is a bratty rich girl constantly building bigger and better robots to beat A-ko, all for the friendship of the most annoyingly voice character ever, C-ko (i know, not the most creative character naming)

Maburaho ****

A decent watch. Story about a young magician boy, who happens to have very powerful genes,  but unfortunately can only use his magic 8 times in his life. but due to his incredible genetic makeup, every girl in his school wants to take his seed, three girls in particular from powerful family lines. These girls all end up falling for him and hilarity ensues

Midori Days - ****

guy wakes up one day with a girl who had a crush on his as his right hand, hilarity ensues. Not a bad series

Please Twins - ***1/2

highschool boy living alone in the house he grew up in, only to find a picture of him as a kid with his twin sister. Two girls show up at his door claiming to be his sister and both end up moving in with him until they can afford to get a DNA test done. of course they both fall for him and make a promise that if they find out they are not his brother, they will be allowed by the other to date him. Has a few tie ins to the next series ill talk about ..

Please Teacher (Onegai Teacher) - ****

Highschool boy withnesses an alien landing, the alien happening to be a hot lady, who turns out to be his teacher at school, but she is really there to observe human behaviour. To cover the fact that he knows her secret, they end up married and living together, and in the end falling in love.

Cowboy Bebop ****1/2

great show. gang of misfit bounty hunters travel the galaxy chasing bounties and running from/chasing their pasts. Its obvious the creator of this series was a fan of western movies, the cowboy references are abundant (as is probably obvious from the series title)

i could probably list a few more, but these are the ones i can think of at the moment

Great Teacher Onizuka (1999-2000)
"Lesson 1: GTO - The Legend Begins"

yay!. Onizuka taking revenge on his own students and calling them his "prey" is one of the funniest things I'll ever see. It also introduces the formula that will drive the best episodes in this series (roughly the first half of the series). Onizuka's facial expressions are a thing of legend.

Great Teacher Onizuka (1999-2000)
"Lesson 2: Enter Uchiyamada"

Onizuka moves to a different school. Here is where he meets his love interest and here is where he meets the one person who embodies the complete opposite of what Onizuka is about, Vice Principal Uchiyamada. The job interview is awesome with Uchiyamada completely going to town Onizuka for his retarded resume. It's awesome.

Great Teacher Onizuka (1999-2000)
"Lesson 3: Late Night Roof Diving"

Onizuka gets assigned the worst class in the school. He's also told he has to live up on the roof. These early episodes are so great. Just Onizuka winning over his students. This episode he makes friends with some random nerd kid who loves video games. Oh, and the recurring bit with Uchiyamada's Cresta starts here. Awesome.

Great Teacher Onizuka (1999-2000)
"Lesson 4: The Secret Life of Onizuka"

Apparently, Onizuka is into gay & BDSM stuff. Well, someone posted pictures of it so it must be true or something. Then his crush gets all flustered, slaps him and runs away. What the CINECAST! is Onizuka to do? Well, he wonders if he somehow is into this stuff without realizing it. w00t.

Great Teacher Onizuka (1999-2000)
"Lesson 5: GTO - An Eye for an Eye, a Butt for a Butt"

Onizuka notices a student is being bullied (after another appearance of the Cresta) so he must take matters into his own hands. I've often wondered what the hell does Onizuka do in his classes if he's supposed to be a teacher. It turns out he just tells scary stories :)

Great Teacher Onizuka (1999-2000)
"Lesson 6: Conspiracies All Around"

Onizuka pisses off the leader of the PTA or something, breaks his arm and must try not to get fired. All meanwhile pwning one of his students in a fighting game. hmmm. It's a good thing that he's made some friends...

Great Teacher Onizuka (1999-2000)
"Lesson 7: The Mother of All Crushes"

Onizuka doesn't want to do some Parent/Teacher conference believing it to be old-fashioned and impersonal but he quickly changes his mind when told that one of his student's mother is around his age. And she's hot. Very hot. Except the kid is a natural born cockblock with a weirdo complex. Oh, the youth!

Great Teacher Onizuka (1999-2000)
"Lesson 8: Bungee Jumping Made Easy"

After a bowling game goes awry, some of Onizuka's students get threatened by thugs. Onizuka promptly joins the thugs in tormenting his students... except he's impersonating Doraemon the entire time. Hilarity ensues (and an Ashita no Joe parody!).

Great Teacher Onizuka (1999-2000)
"Lesson 9: Onizuka and the Art of War"

Onizuka pisses off the PE teacher and gets into a swimming competition with him. Meanwhile, a student from his own class tries to get him fired. Oh and there might a panty thief on the loose... just another day in the life.

Great Teacher Onizuka (1999-2000)
"Lesson 10: Outside Looking In"

Onizuka takes his class on their first field trip as he tries to turn a 14-year-old student (who happens to be a F-Cup--this is anime, after all) into a star... but not before she thinks that Onizuka has sold her into a pornography ring. School is wonderful!
