If we ever try to do this, we should consider the following things:
--a city that is relatively cheap for a lot of people to travel to, and to stay in. When the old Usenet group I've mentioned met up, we used a dorm at University of Toronto (they rented them out in the summer) for one trip, and special hotel group rates for San Diego and Atlanta gatherings.
--One that is reasonable for a 3 or 4 day weekend jaunt (I'm sorry, I think that leaves Australia out entirely)
--Maybe one in conjunction with a smaller film festival -- obviously Toronto or Sundance would be hideously expensive, but maybe that Sarasota one that Matty and Adam went to that time.
--A city where at least one FS-er lives or is very familiar with, so that they can help organize things, recommend places to eat, activities to go do etc.
--Depending on the size of the group who wants to gather, another option is renting one of the giant houses available for rentals at resort places like the Outer Banks of NC or spring break beach towns in Florida. Many of these sleep 14-20 people and there would be a kitchen and fridge available so all meals don't have to be eaten out. There could of course be a continuous film festival running as everyone brings their favorite DVDs; and outdoor activities available as well. Off season rates (all fall/winter in the OB; non spring break/snowbird season in Florida) will be more reasonable. This might also be a possibility in ski resort areas.
It's fun to think about, anyway.
