Have not seen The Thing or Halloween.

The Thing. It's essentially Alien, but it's still really, really good.

The Thing is amazing.

I had a long conversation with one of my closest friends about Carpenter recently.  We came to the decision that Carpenter is only good when he works with Dean Cundey.  Neither of us like anything he did without the great cinematographer.

He's very comparable to Dario Argento. A few movies that are so great they would be considered master works, surrounded by a lot of middling fare and some downright awful films. For my money Halloween remains the greatest horror film ever crafted.
