The Thing is the clear winner for me, but Big Trouble in Little China makes it harder than it should be. What a brilliant piece of subversive 80's action film satire and martial arts send-up - at once a perfect product of its time and brilliantly ahead of its time. Kinda like Ghostbusters.

The Ward John Carpenter, 2010

It's nice to see Carpenter directing again. But maybe this is a warmup for bigger and better things, because there's no much to be excited about here. The story's rudimentary and straightforward. Amber Heard plays some chick in the 50's that burned down some house and she gets taken to some hospital to be checked up on. While she's there she meets four other chicks who are also apparently insane. But there used to be a girl there before. And she's gone missing. Whatever happened to her? That's the mystery that will be zzzz. That shit is boring. So what do we have left? Forward-moving tracking shots of the hospital hallways, lazy jump scares, and a plot that's as boring as whatever. There's none of the precision that I associate with Carpenter. Impersonal? I wouldn't know. I'll leave it to the portuguese to figure that out.

The Fog John Carpenter, 1980

a malevolent force that haunts all the characters, which makes them act all dumb dumb and open the doors (there's no irony or self-awareness) when they clearly shouldn't. jamie lee curtis shows up for a bit, other people do too, all of them trying to outrun the fog, like in Shyamalan's magnificent The Happening, where people try to outrun the wind? none of them are fully-fleshed characters, just shapes that things happen to. the objects with the most personality are the [redacted] that reside in the fog. those [redacted] look badass. carpenter's skills remain in framing and pacing; characterization (at least in this one), not so much.  but that's alright. that's how i like my genre thrills brother.

Halloween - Will need to re-watch this I think I was stonned.
They Live - I thought this movie was so poorly made. Great idea though.
