Only Lovers Left Alive
* *

Jim Jarmusch used to care about plot, logic or the viewer more than this. Considering where his filmmaking tastes have led him, it's no surprise that he's made a film about soulless beings interested only in surfaces. The only blood in this corpse is courtesy of the prop department. Tilda Swinton is overqualified for her role.

Now I feel like a very superficial person. - I loved Only Lovers Left Alive. Perhaps it's just my angst of death as I'm already halfway through life and have to confront my mortality. It makes you think about what the alternative would be like. But at least we can agree on the superiority of Tilda Swinton. She's perfect.

See, I love the director Jarmusch has become. I'm super excited to see Lovers, and I knew I was in love with The Limits of Control about five minutes into it. I like Jarmusch's style, how he uses a minimalist approach in his own way, and feel that his films speak to me as a viewer, and that he cares deeply about his audience with the films he's making.

That's a better way to put it. "He cares deeply about his audience with the films he's making." I have to accept that his audience no longer includes me. Only Lovers Left Alive is a mood piece, not too far removed from Limits of Control. He doesn't put characters on screen, but faces and personalities that can bring a lot of attitude. Tom Hiddleston is a fine actor, but everything he does here is exactly like when he plays Loki or that Jaguar commercial about British bad guys.
